1. Peel Public Health partnered with Health Evidence to determine if available research supported claims that breastfeeding leads to improved cognitive development in children. 2. A literature search found 4 moderate quality studies but 6 had serious flaws. The good quality evidence suggested no relationship between breastfeeding and cognitive development when controlling for maternal characteristics. 3. Based on the research evidence and consideration of public health experience and credibility, Peel Public Health decided not to use a poster concept about the relationship between breastfeeding and IQ, but to continue messaging about other benefits like reduced infections and appropriate weight.
