NASA has developed the Vegetable Production System (Veggie) to grow fresh produce aboard the International Space Station. Veggie uses passive wicking and plant pillows to grow leafy greens without soil in microgravity. Astronauts have harvested and consumed crops such as lettuce grown in Veggie to supplement their diet during long-duration missions. NASA continues developing Veggie to grow a variety of crops and enable sustainable food production for future missions to the Moon and Mars.
