SCREAMSCREAM!!!
ScreamThe film opening first starts off with a black background screen with ghostly white titles. The sound playing in the background of this film is eerie and weird. This could be one of the first indicators to the Audience that the genre of the film is a horror. The sound effects then fade into loud screams and the telephone ringing noises. The white ghostly titles then change into red titles. Red is normally associated with danger and harm. Red titles also indicate that the movie is a horror because horrors usually have violence and killing which links back to the red titles. While the white titles are changing into red a loud chopping sound plays in the background. The chopping sound helps build up an image in the audiences mind that something drastic is bound to happen. The screams and telephone noises become louder and louder as the film fades into a close up of the telephone. This could be to illustrate where the made problem starts. This is a match on action shot. The sound in the film changes more from non digetic to digetic.
The scene then changes into a close up of a girl which establishes her character. This tells the audience that she is possibly one of the main characters and could be the one who gets killed. The close up of her face gives the audience an idea of how she’s like. Normally in horrors there is an innocent character that is left alone unprotected. That is the case in this instance. We can also pick up from the close up that she has received a strange phone call. The lighting in the film is dim which creates an uneasy feeling and it indicates that the film is happening during the night. After the she hangs up the camera tracks her as the phone rings again. The tracking illustrates her point of view. We see another mid shot of her picking up the phone nut this time the scene is appearing at an abnormal angle. This could be another sign to the audience that a terrible event is about to occur and that this normal picture could change to abnormal. Then the scene changes into an establishing shot of her house outside. This gives a sign to the audience that she is home alone. In the scene there is movement of the swing but no- one is there. This could be a sign that the girl is being watched from a distance. The sound effect of nature makes a huge impact on emphasizing that she is home alone. The next scene that appears is a close up of the stove being switched on. The red fire that appears also builds up an image of danger in the Audiences mind. The scene then runs into a mid shot of her in the kitchen playing with the knifes. This is can be example of a convention of a horror. The props used in this scene are sharp which can be associated with violence and even killingThe lighting in this scene is still very dark. The camera tracks her around the house again showing us the audience a view of her house. This gives us a feel of what is going on in the house. As she picks up the phone for the third time she sounds annoyed. The caller then asks her questions as she locks the house and then the climax builds up as the caller mentions her name
