Keynote speech given at the 7th Workshop on the Reliability of Intelligent Environments (Rome, 26 June 2018) http://www.ugr.es/~worie/2018/
Abstract:
The definition of Intelligent Environments has always been focused around their *users*, aiming at helping them in a smart and transparent way, and avoiding bothering them or acting against their will. The complexity of IEs, whose technologies range from sensors to machine learning, from distributed architectures to tangible interfaces, from communication protocols to data analysis, challenges researchers from various fields to contribute innovative and effective solutions. In this quest for technical solutions to the myriad requirements of an intelligent environments, user expectations are often left behind, and while researchers tend to focus on niche technical aspects, they risk of losing the big picture of an IE ``helping users in their daily life''.
How Mistral AI raised €105m with no pitch deck or productPitch Decks
Eyebrows were raised after Paris-based AI startup Mistral raised €105m with no product, a mere four weeks after launching. While some welcomed the raise as a milestone for European tech, others saw it as sign of AI hype reaching a feverish peak.
Their pitch memo focuses on two main selling points:1) that Europe has “yet to see the appearance of a serious contender” in building foundational models, and that Mistral will play a big role in this “major geopolitical issue”, and 2) embracing an open-source approach (unlike OpenAI's “black box” system) will make it easier for companies to build “better, faster” products. The company raised from notable investors including Lightspeed Ventures, French billionaire Xavier Niel and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

Welcome to the GAETSS April 2017 e-newsletter. The last four weeks since my March newsletter have been amongst the most hectic and productive periods for many years. As well as spending almost 3 weeks in South East Asia and Australia for the Digital Earth and CGAT conferences, I have filmed, edited and published 36 videos in 360 degree format and written several articles for different journals on innovative uses of digital technology. In this newsletter, I plan to cover some of those activities as well as recent development in disruptive technologies that will present significant challenges and opportunities.
I am also looking for fresh challenges for myself to leverage my experience and expertise in the technologies that are exponentially shaping the future and the extensive global network of talented people that I have developed over the last decade.

In Coastal area plants do not grow properly because of the seawater. So to overcome these difficulties, the use of this technique can provide a proper plant growth. The seawater combines a solar desalination system with an environment for cultivating crops in which transpiration is minimized. To provide fresh water we use sunlight, seawater and cooled humid air to supply more sustainable environment condition for cultivation of crops in arid coastal region. This project tries to describe simulation the seawater considering condition of the arid region in district like Kutch (Gujarat) and in many countries like Iran, Oman. With desalination of seawater, it aims to provide sustainable local production of food by combining a growing environment in which water usage is minimized by solar energy. The technique is adapted for farms in arid coastal region that are suffering from salt infected soils and shortages of potable ground water. This technique may produce around 90-95% of total fresh water.
Exploring technology-driven service innovation in manufacturing firms through...Shaun West
This paper attempts to explore technology-driven service innovation in manufacturing firms. It addresses the characteristics and ‘smartness’ of services provided by manufacturing companies and large OEMs within the context of product service systems enabled by Industry 4.0/IoT technologies (i.e. digital servitization).
The paper takes ten different IOT-based service systems, and through the lens of Service Dominant (SD) logic analyses the different approaches used in service innovation. The dimensions used for the analysis are ‘service ecosystem’, ‘service platform’ and ‘value co-creation’.
It was found, in some cases, that the proposed innovations cannot be considered ‘smart’ through the lens of SD logic, since they contribute little to value co-creation and to the development of ecosystems. Nevertheless, this does not negate their usefulness. We further discriminate between the different approaches to digital servitization, respectively app-ization and system-thinking. Last, the paper highlights that enabling technologies are provided by players that differ in terms of service scope and capabilities to run the service operations.

Towards Agent-oriented Blockchains: Autonomous Smart ContractsGiovanni Ciatto
Features of blockchain technology (BCT) such as decentralisation, trust, fault tolerance, and accountability, are of paramount importance for multi-agent systems (MAS). In this paper we argue that a principled approach to MAS-BCT integration cannot overlook the foundational character of agency—that is, autonomy. Accordingly, we present a custom BCT implementation where autonomy is placed in smart contracts (SC) interpreted as software agents. We show how agency can enhance SC expressiveness with autonomy, situatedness, sociality, and intelligence, and highlight the limitations of state-of-art BCT in supporting MAS design and implementation.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
Essentials of Automations: Optimizing FME Workflows with ParametersSafe Software
Are you looking to streamline your workflows and boost your projects’ efficiency? Do you find yourself searching for ways to add flexibility and control over your FME workflows? If so, you’re in the right place.
