There are two main types of tundra: Arctic and Alpine. Arctic tundra is a cold, treeless plain found around the Arctic Ocean in far northern regions of Europe, Asia, and North America, characterized by low, swampy grounds. Alpine tundra lacks trees due to high elevation rather than latitude, and both types of tundra have permanently frozen subsoil called permafrost.
