Arctic tundra is a cold, treeless, low-lying plain found around the Arctic Ocean in northern parts of Europe, Asia, North America and Greenland. It is characterized by permafrost or partially frozen subsoil. Common animals include musk ox, polar bears, and snow hares. Alpine tundra exists at high elevations rather than high latitudes and is also treeless.
