For his foundation diploma, the director will create a 3-minute horror film opening by researching lighting, camera, sound, and visual techniques from other horror films. He will storyboard the scenes and cast characters to plan shot framing and on-set visuals. During production, the director will make camera and technical decisions, communicate with the camera operator, and direct actors to enhance their skills and meet genre conventions.

1. My role as a Director
For my foundation diploma, I am the director of a film opening which has a duration of 3
minutes. During the build up to the production I am going research horror films and how the
directors have created a scary atmosphere and what lighting, camera, and sound techniques
I need to apply so the production meets with the conventions of a horror film. Then I am
going to create a realist picture of the mis en scene and cast so I have an accurate idea of
how the visual imagery and the characters. During the production, as a director my role is to
make decisions as to which camera shots will be created. This will them be communicated to
the camera operator. I will also make decisions about the visual style, script, lighting and mis
en scene. In order for me to do this, I will have to research a range of horror films with
elements which I can apply to my own production. Also I need to get the best out of my
actors; I need to find out their strengths and weakness through discussion and also
assessing them when they are in rehearsals. With their weaknesses I need to give them the
confidence and support them so they can overcome and get better at their acting skills so we
can meet all conventions required.
