My Motivation To Teach
My motivation to teach at the university and college level as well as give back to the my
industry can be best summarized by the following opinion pieces:
– “When Bjarne Stroustrup, the designer of C++, decries the training of software developers in our colleges and universities, we need
to do something about it. Bjarne believes that “few students see code as anything but a disposable entity needed to complete the next project
and get good grades. Much of the emphasis in teaching encourages that view.” Ouch! He advises students: Programming is part of software
development. It doesn’t matter how fancy your code is unless it solves the right problem and you can explain it to others. So brush up on your
communication skills. Learn to listen, to ask good questions, to write clearly and to present clearly. Serious programming is a team sport;
brush up on your social skills. The sloppy fat geek computer genius semi-buried in a pile of pizza boxes and cola cans is a mythical creature,
best buried deep, never to be seen again.”

– “Seventy percent fewer students have majored in computer science since 2000; women declined by 80%, she said, citing Computing
Research Association data. The Higher Education Research Institute has determined that only 1% of students are majoring in computer
science, and 0.3% are women, she added. Over the past eight years, there has been a slight increase in women's enrollment on the
undergraduate level, according to data compiled by Anthony Chow, an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
“At the graduate level, however, non-resident aliens become a major factor while minority enrollment in general plummets to very small
percentages," he added. Cuny added, "If this trend holds true, we will be unable to produce enough students for the jobs that are out there.
Large segments of the population do not participate in computer science-related careers. "Retention of minority employees is another issue.
Nearly half of all minorities leave technology jobs to enter other occupations, said National Association for the Advancement of Colored

My Motivation To Teach My motivation to teach at the university and college level as well as give back to the my industry can be best summarized by the following opinion pieces: – “When Bjarne Stroustrup, the designer of C++, decries the training of software developers in our colleges and universities, we need to do something about it. Bjarne believes that “few students see code as anything but a disposable entity needed to complete the next project and get good grades. Much of the emphasis in teaching encourages that view.” Ouch! He advises students: Programming is part of software development. It doesn’t matter how fancy your code is unless it solves the right problem and you can explain it to others. So brush up on your communication skills. Learn to listen, to ask good questions, to write clearly and to present clearly. Serious programming is a team sport; brush up on your social skills.
