Ubuntu drives long-term decisions amongst neighbor and allows justice decisions to consider individual interest and group interests. This workshop will analyze the strategies and methodologies available to organizations and congregations to resolve conflict. How can we identify issues that lead to major confrontations? How do we address issues of conflict? What are the processes of mediating conflict? This workshop traces a pathway through the literature that provides us the tools to address conflict in a multi-cultural environment.

The first implementation of the system was a link between Chicago and Cape Town across an 8-hour time zone internationally in 2007, which was covered by the Sun-Times and other local newspapers. Some of the benefits of this implementation include utilizing technology in classrooms to develop technology proficiency, creating international connections amongst students, and a cost effective solution to support and supplement international and intercultural experiences.

13. The Anti-Apartheid Struggle and the Civil Rights Movement. Students will study the many parallels between the Anti-Apartheid struggles of South Africa and the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Drawing upon intercultural content within an international context, the reading list will address critical race theory and include writings by and about Tutu, King, Gandhi, Mandela, Biko, and Malcolm X, as well as learning from the oral traditions of 1960s activists. The seminar format will allow for direct interaction and learning from international activists. Student assessment will include a research project that involves interviewing of actual participants in these historical events.
14. Change Strategies This workshop addresses transformational strategies used in struggles throughout the world. There will be an informational segment to illuminate familiar strategies of resistance using examples from many countries over many years. The second will be an exploratory segment that will look at longer term views of change and transformation, tying together isolated incidents into a global picture. The third segment will be inspirational looking at what small victories mean, seeing small steps in perspective to societal transformation, and identifying gains, both large and small, short term and long term. The fourth and final segment will be an analysis of the South African non-racial transformation. One line of strategy will be used to illustrate the impact on the national struggle. This is designed as a 3-hour workshop. It has been presented as a 90-minute overview.
