Youth, Conflict & Governance in Africa
Friday, 2/28 and Saturday, 3/1 • 10 Sachem, Room 105
This workshop is convened to assess how young people are currently changing the nature of governance in Africa. Youth are capitalizing on new mechanisms for interaction: the deregulation of internet, phone, global television, and social media communication has profoundly altered the political terrain. This is especially true in conflict settings, where youth can drive overt political violence. To break new ground, the workshop will integrate analysis across anthropology, media studies and communication, politics and economics, fields that have been working largely in parallel rather than in collaboration.

During the COVID-19 Global Pandemic, there were multiple lessons provided to the world. In this talk, I set the stage for the discussion, highlight the issues we faced (and still face), I speak to an effort that contributed to help address one of those issues, then speak to future challenges and our responsibilities going forward.
Social media is not a replacement of previous forms of communication. Keep doing those things you used to do, social media is just another tool. The strength of social media is that it can empower your audiences to participate in your communication and brand development….hopefully in a good way.
Dorothea Kleine discussed the importance of understanding the contexts in which children use technologies. Drawing on her recent report, co-authored with David Hollow and Sammia Poveda, Children, ICT and development (2014), Kleine first questioned normative assumptions in the global North, in terms of their often-assumed relevance to the global South, and then offered recommendations for a global research framework. She particularly cautioned against the normative assumptions evident in many established, large-scale surveys (e.g., construction around childhood/adulthood, gender roles, heteronormativity and the nuclear family). She additionally observed that ‘reported behaviour is not the same as behaviour’, and what surveys are bound to record is simply recorded behaviour. She recommended triangulating research methods.
Kleine urged participants to shift from thinking of children as objects of inquiry to co-creators of meaning, and therefore to develop participatory models that involve children and young people at each stage. She also emphasised the importance of involving locals in the research process to get a better sense of local context, a higher sense of ownership and improved chance of project viability and sustainability after the instigators have left. She outlined a research framework, the ‘choice framework’ that considers structural factors (e.g., norms on the use of space or use of time) as well as issues of agency and individual resources, including social resources, psychological resources, cultural resources, information and time. Kleine’s discussion of research methods consistently tied advocacy and intervention goals to the framing and implementation of the research, prioritising children’s voices, envisioning solutions, addressing policy needs throughout the process, treating research as part of a meaningful participatory approach and not as an end in itself. Further, she advocated close links between survey research, participatory action research and policy research and advisory work.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Synthetic Fiber Construction in lab .pptxPavel ( NSTU)
Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_FOfHwH-WU
Our Sudan was a unique endeavor, a film made in Sudan, by Sudanese, for Sudanese with money raised not from international donor agencies but through an online campaign targeting the Sudanese diaspora and through the in kind support and professional expertise of local companies and NGOs including DAL Group, In the City, Sudia and Jafro records. The project drew on a cast and crew of thirty volunteers, recording two films (one in Arabic and one in English) in under two months and providing an opportunity for a group of young Sudanese to work together, forge friendships based on shared endeavor, learn the skills of film making and project management and produce something that we are all deeply proud of. All of this in the challenging and difficult environment. The equipment bought for the film is going to be donated to TEDx Khartoum and we now have a team with skills and experience in film making. So not only did you support an exciting new film but you invested in Sudan’s future. . Since the release of the English version of Our Sudan on 6th of June 2013 the film has been viewed over 63,000 times and continues to be watched by hundreds of people every day. The Arabic version released in early August has clocked over 8000 viewings and counting. Meaning that together the Our Sudan films have in only a few short months been viewed by over 70,000 people. We have had dozens of messages public and private from Sudanese; young and old; saying how much the film meant to them, reminding them of the countries potential and its promise. A young woman inspired to come back and serve her country, a film maker moved to share his vision and Sudanese activists in Washington DC setting up their own project to remind Sudanese in America to think more positively about Sudan.... are just a few of the stories we have heard.Last week we received the final installment of the Our Sudan project - T-shirts, posters and CDs - courtesy of the support and sponsorship of the DAL group. These will be used to thank the people who invested in the project financially and temporally and will be posted to our supporters all around the world. Few did more to make this project happen than you and as small token of our appreciation we will be sending you all a package of thanks. Once again. Thank you...... Thank you.Stay strong and speak soon
Nafeer is a popular campaign, responding to the call for collective action that stems from the Sudanese customs and traditions that have been handed down for centuries, which is deeply embedded in Sudanese norms and heritage and is supported and protected by the constitution and law.” The campaign seeks to help fellow Sudanese who were affected by the flash floods and heavy rains that hit different parts of the country in August 2013. Our activities include providing necessary and urgent assistance in the following areas: 1. Food provision;2. Basic health care;3. Environmental sanitation;4. Awareness Raising; and5. Preventive measures such as strengthening flood barricades. This campaign will come to a close with the end of 2013’s rainy season.
