made of the African Mudcloth – an exclusive West African loom-
woven fabric hand painted with the rich soils of the Motherland!
Straight from the remote mudcloth villages of Mali
come some of the most amazing material that can be used for
clothing and home décor.
The designs, symbols and artwork depict the African cultures and
legacies passed on from generation to generation.
My Little Mud Hut brings the beautiful riches of
Africa to the World.

What is Mudcloth?
Mudcloth is a raw handspun and woven fabric made exclusively in
Mali, West Africa
This fabric is dyed with natural dyes that are made from mud and plants.
In the Bambara language, spoken in Mali, the word bògòlanfini is a
composition of three words. Bogo, meaning “earth” or “mud,” lan, meaning
“with” and fini, meaning “cloth.” The word is translated as “mud cloth.”
In the 1990s, bogolanfini or mudcloth production was seen as an
entrepreneurial opportunity and perhaps it was easier for young men who
were less restricted by home and family responsibilities to obtain capital
to purchase materials.
As tradition dictates, only men are allowed to weave the narrow strips of
plain, cotton fabric on hand-made looms.
These strips are, then, pieced
together into a larger
rectangular cloth and
transformed into the final
cloth that is used for fashions
and decor.
The beautifully-crafted final product does not reveal
the meticulous work that goes into each design.
The cloth is first dyed in baths of the leaves and
branches of trees. This dye acts as a caustic.
The now-yellow cloth is sun-dried and patterns are
painstakingly painted with a special mud, which had
been collected from ponds during the previous seasons
and left to ferment.
As the cloth
dries, the dark
black mud turns
gray and the
cloth is washed
to remove excess
mud.
This process is
repeated
numerous times
and with each
application, the
mud-painted
area of the cloth
becomes darker.
The yellow areas are painted with
a bleach, which turns the yellow
patterns brown.
The cloth is left to dry in the sun
for a week.
When the bleach solution is
washed off with water, what
remains is the characteristic
white pattern on a dark
background.
So, technically, the beautiful designs are not designs drawn on white
background but white designs bleached into the mud background.
How amazing is THAT?
Although it is not
recommended, this
fabric can be washed in
30° C (cold) water
without color loss.
However, as the dyes
are natural and may
wash out over time, dry
cleaning may be
preferable. Although it
can not be “washed”,
the mudcloth can be
cleaned by brushing,
beating or vacuuming
to retain its beautiful
intention.
Each mudcloth is
different. Even if
they bear the same
symbols and
patterns, because
each is handmade,
the design is
thoroughly unique.
Just one of the many
things that make
traditional mud cloth so
special is that each piece
has a story to tell.
Even the arrangement of
the symbols on the cloth
reveals something secret
about the intended
meaning, and this
language of the cloth
was passed down from
mother to daughter.
These motifs were
traditionally codes for a small
group of people. They just
weren’t meant to be
understood by the uninitiated.
It is the language of a
community so there will
always be just a little bit of
mystery for the outsider.
While it is made in Africa, many locals of Ghana do not have
access to the unusual cloths. Outside of people ordering
mudcloth for overseas shipping, the industry is mainly fostered
by visitors and tourists as they frequent Mali.

Sales Promotions and Targets
Being that the availability of mudcloth is non-existent in the southern
region of America, the potential for attaining customers is enormous.
Our website www.mylittlemudhut.com will serve as our main marketing
tool for personal sales; retail outlets; malls and online ordering.
Social media is also a powerful tool for garnering business. Newspaper
advertisements are relatively inexpensive and can be used to promote
orders and sales.
I have made arrangements with our supplier and costs estimates and
budget will be available upon your acceptance as a serious investor.
We are expecting this to be a one-of-a-kind venture for each of us that can
bring us great and profitable returns.
