3. folclore
crafts & cork
Folclore Crafts celebrates the natural richness of
our materials and the ingenuity of Portuguese
people’s know-how. We are inspired by the vibrant
corlos of our folklore, but also by the rustic look of
our raw materials, like cork.
We learn from many handcrafting techniques,
including the know how of harvesting, preparing
and handcrafting cork.
Handcrafting the Portuguese soul is our drive and
we make it happen providing unique craft supplies,
like cork fabric, paper and wall paper, beads, balls,
cord, straps, handles, fringes, yarn, agglomerated
and decorative sheets, grains, shavings and virgin
cork bark.

Portugal is the place for

4. The “montado”, a forest that grows in Portugal and in
other Mediterranean countries, is the natural habitat
of the cork oak tree and of many other unique
species. Portugal is number one cork producer in the
world.
Every nine years, high skilled workers use all their
experience to strip the cork oak tree, a very hard job
performed during the hot spring and summer months.
After being removed from the tree, cork comes in light
and large curved planks.
all cork stories begin in the montado
When the bark of a cork-oak tree is harvested, a
new layer of cork grows back slowly during the
following nine years, allowing it to continue to
absorb carbon dioxide while preserving the
“montado” and the maintenance of natural
species.
Cork industry contributes not only to local
development but also to the cork-oak field
ecosystem, promoting a perfect marriage
between humans and nature.
the balance of humans and nature
After harvesting, cork oak trees are marked in white
paint signalling that they should not be harvested
before more nine years pass.
see you in nine years...
5. this is cork...
After the extraction, cork planks rest in the open air for
some months, releasing its sap and moisture contents.
Then they are boiled, undergoing some changes, like
volume increasing, and after being dried, they are
separated depending on quality and cut into
appropriate bars. Even those planks showing deffect will
be will be used, cork is never wasted.
Cork is soft, lightweight, versatile, impermeable,
insulating, very durable, and dust and dirt
repellent. It’s eco-friendly, 100% natural,
renewable, recyclable and biodegradable.
The natural physical and chemical
properties of cork are impossible
to recreate in an artificial way.
Cork use dates back thousands of years and its future depends on us…
6. why is folclore crafts different?
,
,
We contribute to the creation of an economic return to
natural resources, promoting montado’s ecosystem..
We support the reduction of miles travelled, impacting
on pollution and fossil fuels’ use, by choosing local
producers.
We choose our inputs inspired by the aim of producing the
most eco-friendly products possible.
we are committed to sustainability
the planet
We promote local employment from the harvesting to
manufacturing. Fair and safe working conditions are
provided to an important female labour force, in an area
where unemployment is very high among women, who
suffer severe living conditions.
We support a secular activity in Portugal, cork
transformation, full of cultural and traditional impact.
people
We participate in a sustainable value chain in cork
industry, where cork transformation happens near its
source and value created is distributed where it is
generated.
We’ve been developing partnerships, based on a
collaborative culture, creating new and innovative
products unique in the market.
prosperity
We offer a wide range of cork products, sometimes
giving a new life to “old cork goods”, like cork balls and
cork granules.
We invest in design, developing new natural patterns,
instead of printed patterns. Each new pattern reveals how
we love to “play” with cork and to show all its natural
richness.
We produce cork fabric with multiple support backings,
allowing us to offer many different cork textiles.
we are committed to innovation
We are 100% Portuguese, from raw material to high
skilled know how and innovative technologies. “Made in
Portugal” is now a quality label for cork materials, most of
the time improperly used, since many cork products,
including cork fabric, use Portuguese cork but are not
made in Portugal.

Cork fabric is a unique craft material with a cork
surface on a fabric backing. It looks like leather,
but can be used as a regular fabric.
Also known as cork leather, it was born of the
perfect marriage between human talent and
nature’s richness, being much more than the
best “animal free” substitute for leather. Cork
fabric’s uses are more versatile than those of
leather and its looks are more diverse.
We are able to offer a wide range of cork
fabrics. This includes the one sided version with
different thicknesses, from very thin and pliable
options to thicker and more resistant ones. And
also the sturdy reversible cork fabrics, unique
and original products that you may use instead
of leather in your craft projects.
Our clients can choose the cork fabric that best
suits their work and it’s even possible to develop
customized products that fits specific needs.
how special our cork fabric is
9. Cork fabric is produced using very thin cork sheets
obtained from slicing cork planks or blocks, which are
transformed from natural or agglomerated cork by the
use of heat and high pressure.
We offer a soft and natural touch and texture, very
difficult to find, only possible using the best quality cork
shavings, water-based adhesive and resisting to work
with chemical products or PVC backings.
The thin cork sheets must be adhered to a fabric support. They
are placed together by human hands, requiring high precision
skills, almost like patchwork. For a better look, the fabric is
hand sanded and this handcrafted process ends with the
application of a protective finishing.

PATTERNS & COLORS
Three decorative cork veneer types are available - natural cork,
agglomerated cork and dyed colors (Natural Cork + Pigment).
Our supply includes more than 50 not printed patterns made of
natural cork and agglomerated cork.
We offer a range of more than 25 beautiful colors, dyed and not
printed. All patterns can be dyed.
BACKINGS
We work with six different backings, making it possible to offer a
unique range of different types of cork textiles, from 0.4mm to
1.1mm thick, including a new and 100% eco-friendly solution. It’s
possible to try your own backing. For almost all the backings, two
reversible options are available: single-layered and double-layered.
The color of the backing can be lighter or darker, depending on the
color/pattern of the cork veneer.
WIDTH
Almost all our cork fabrics are 140cm/55” wide.
ADHESIVE AND FINISHING
Our cork fabrics use a water-based adhesive (mixture of
copolymer dispersions and additives in aqueous media) and are
coated with a hydrophobic protector (a mixture of surfactants,
additives and organic solvents in an aqueous solution). Our cork
fabric was tested on an accredited lab (including adhesives and
finishing products) and was approved to be used on products for
children under 3 years old. Cork fabric is hypoallergenic,
anti-bacterial and hygienic; it is water, dust, dirt and grease
repellent.

how to use cork fabric
Most of our cork fabrics can be hand embroidered and sewed
using a standard sewing machine and a regular thread. Cork
fabric is fairly strong and does not pull or rip apart very easily. The
reversible cork fabrics are more similar to leather than to a regular
fabric and leather craft techniques are recommended.
Cork fabric is easy to use as a fabric or as leather...
... can be cut with a common pair of scissors, a box cutter
or a rotary cutter.
... can be glued with water-based adhesive.
... accepts laser cut, digital printing and stamping.
Cork fabric is very resistant to wear, there’s no need for specific care. It’s recommended to clean the surface with
a dump cloth, preferably with white / blue soap. For a more profound cleaning, we suggest the wool program in
a washing machine. New products aimed at cleaning and maintaining cork fabric are now available.
