3. Process
My process begins with a scaled drawing of the product I intend to
make. From there, I create a template on Adobe Illustrator, print
the template, and cut the pieces from a hide. All goods are hand
sewn with a saddle stitch technique, and feature beveled, bur-
nished, dyed and waxed edges.

8. Interior
Focused on the Japanese concept of “mottainai”, a value that en-
courages one to waste nothing and recycle everything, Kiriko
Made sells Japanese home goods, apparel, and textiles. I worked as
a production intern at this company, where I created products and
retail displays for the store.

Within People of Color in Business, we operate with a mission statement of
“building alongside community through empowering the exploration and
navigation of personal identity/s in recognition of the needs that the insti-
tution neglects to provide”. Put more simply, we seek to provide our mem-
bers with the opportunities that our College of Business so often fails do. As
such, our work includes both social and academic initiatives. In regards to
our social meetings, we intentionally create social spaces that give members
the opportunities to engage with other people of color in a space not dom-
inated by whiteness. In the past, these events have taken the form of club
barbecues, movie nights, potlucks, and restaurant trips. For our academic/
professional meetings, we operate with the objective of empowering our
club members to navigate the rapidly changing professional environment
as it pertains to the experience of people of color. To highlight some of the
events we have held to this end, we’ve brought in global DEI directors and
small business owners to talk about their professions, and professors to lead
talks about personal finance.
Along with our student-focused initiatives, we also work directly with the
College of Business to restructure the unjust systems that work within it.
In 2020, we worked with the Dean of Business in creating the College’s DEI
Strategic Plan, with the Director of Marketing on creating ways to accurate-
ly and ethically market the experience of students of color to prospective
college students. Along with this, we’ve worked extensively with the local
Boys and Girls Club, hosting Q&A sessions about how their identities are
reflected in the College of Business. Finally, we have also worked with the
College’s third party consulting firm on their project to create the College’s
next 5 year Strategic Plan.
