2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. Pre-school
A blackboard can simply be a piece of board painted
with matte dark paint (usually black or dark green).
A more modern variation consists of a coiled sheet
of plastic drawn across two parallel rollers, which
can be scrolled to create additional writing space
while saving what has been written. The highest
grade blackboards are made of a rougher version
porcelain enamelled steel (black, green, blue or
3. sometimes other colours). Porcelain is very hard
wearing and blackboards made of porcelain usually
last 10–20 years in intensive use.
Magnetic blackboard used for play and learning at the
children's museum, Kitchener, Canada (The Museum)
Lecture theatres may contain a number of
blackboards in a grid arrangement. The lecturer then
moves boards into reach for writing and then move
them out of reach, allowing a large amount of
material to be shown simultaneously.
The chalk marks can be easily wiped off with a damp
cloth, a sponge or a special
blackboard eraser consisting of a block of wood
covered by a felt pad. However, chalk marks made
on some types of wet blackboard can be difficult to
remove. Blackboard manufacturers often advise that
a new or newly resurfaced blackboard be completely
covered using the side of a stick of chalk and then
that chalk brushed off as normal to prepare it for
use.
4. Chalkstick fractures are fractures, typically of long
bones, in which the fracture is transverse to the long
axis of the bone, like a broken stick of chalk. A
healthy long bone typically breaks like a hard woody
stick as the collagen in the matrix adds remarkable
flexibility to the mineral and the energy can run up
and down the growth rings of bone. The bones of
children will even follow a greenstick
fracture pattern.
6. ELMENTARY OR PRIMARY SCHOOL
The furniture in your classroom isn't just a bunch of
meaningless wood, metal, and plastic. In fact, how you
arrange the desks in your room says a lot to students,
parents, and visitors about what you want to accomplish
and even what you believe about student interactions
and learning.
7. Television to Improve Education
Since most children love to watch television, it is the ideal
tool for entertaining while educating. Several years ago, that
premise led the non-profit foundation KCFI to establish the
Knowledge Channel (KCh). Today, KCh is an important part
of the school day in more than 2,000 elementary and high
schools, beamed across the Philippines 18 hours a day,
seven days a week, and watched by 3 million students.
To ensure the program’s sustainability, KCFI also trains the
teachers on how to use KCh and its programs as a teaching
tool, monitor school implementation up to two (2) years after
connection. Continued engagement with students,
teachers, parents, community officials and the local
Department of Education is in place to, encourage them to
formulate their own plans to keep the project going locally.
8. HIGH SCHOOL
The Language and Speech Laboratory is a multidisciplinary research group
based in the University of the Basque Country which investigates issues
concerning speech and language acquisition including the following specific
areas:
1. Acquisition of syntax, morphology, lexicon, discourse and pragmatics
2. Speech perception and production
3. Auditory modelling
4. Bilingualism and multilingualism
5. Language attitudes
6. Instructed Foreign Language Acquisition
7. Robust automatic speech recognition
8. Computer models of word recognition in noise
9. COLLEGE
A whiteboard (also known by the terms markerboard, dryerase board, dry-wipe board, pen-board, and the
misnomer greaseboard) is a name for any glossy, usually
white surface for nonpermanent markings. Whiteboards are
analogous to chalkboards, allowing rapid marking and
erasing of markings on their surface. The popularity of
whiteboards increased rapidly in the mid-1990s and they
have become a fixture in many offices, meeting rooms,
school classrooms, and other work environments.
10. A marker pen, marking pen, felt-tip
pen, flow, marker or texta (in Australia), is a penwhich has
its own ink-source, and usually a tip made of a porous,
pressed fibers such asfelt.[1] A typical permanent marker
consists of a container (glass, aluminum or plastic) and a
core of an absorbent material. This filling serves as a carrier
for the ink. The upper part of the marker contains the nib
that was made in earlier time of a hard felt material, and a
cap to prevent the marker from drying out. Until the early
1990s the most common solvents that were used for the ink
were toluene and xylene. These two substances are both
harmful and characterized by a very strong smell. Today, the
ink is usually made on the basis of alcohols
11. Computers are increasingly being incorporated into school
curriculums. Teachers present processes and concepts
using programs such as Powerpoint, and students can utilize
visual models and word processor to enhance their learning
experience. Are Computers Effective at instructing students
to retain information better? Some studies show a dramatic
increase in performance while others show that CAI has
small to moderate-sized positive effects on achievement
(Avrim, 2000). From research, it can be concluded that CAI
is best used when it is in addition to the instruction of a
teacher and not when it replaces the teacher. The exact
implications of computers in the classroom are unclear, but
one thing that is apparent is that the outlook of computers
in education is promising.
