My grandpa Perkov Anatoliy Ivanovich was an accomplished athlete from a young age. He excelled in many sports like football, tennis, volleyball, and running. He represented his hometown in regional competitions and even traveled to Moscow for the 1980 Olympics. Now in his 60s, he continues to be very active, inspiring his grandchildren to enjoy sports. He has passed on his love of an active lifestyle to his family.

My athletic grandpa
1. MY ATHLETIC GRANDPA
Hello, everybody!
I knew about this project, when I watched Track-andField World Championship held in Moscow. I was so impressed by
the runners and jumpers that I wanted to write about such
famous sportsmen as Usain Bolt or Elena Isinbaeva. Then I
thought why not to write about Ivan Shtyl? We come from the
same parts! But…a lot of people will write about them. And then
how can the world know about one very talented sportsman, not
very famous maybe, but very dear to me? And I decided to tell
you about my athletic grandad!

2. My grandpa’s name is Perkov Anatoliy Ivanovich.
He was born in 1949 in Zabaikalye where he has
lived all his life. He was a smart, friendly and
active boy. He liked playing football and was the
best goal-keeper in the yard. Like any guy in his
village Tolya dreamt of a good pair of trainers
and a new football.
I was lucky to find my grandpa’s Diplomas for
his sport progress at school! Here they are:

3. After finishing his school, my grandad entered the Polytechnic
Institute in Irkutsk. The future engineer was a good student. His
serious sports career began there, too. He was a player for the
Institute Volleyball Team and took part in all track and field
competitions held in the city. Grandpa was an excellent runner for
short and long distances.

Grandad’s sports career was a success, too. He played volleyball for
the Town Team, basketball for his Factory Team, was a good runner
and skier. He is well-known in the town Pervomayskiy where he lives. I
took photos of some of his awards:

5. One of grandpa’s bright sport memories is going to
Moscow to the 22nd Olympic Games in 1980 as a honored
representative from his native town.
In August, 1989 there was The First All-Union
Workers’ Sports Festival held in Moscow. Only six
best sportsmen were sent there from my grandpa’s place.
Of course, my grandad was among them! He was happy to
represent Zabaikalye in the capital of our country. He took
part in 10 km races, relay-races, table-tennis and volleyball.
