  • #5 Rap started in New York City in the 1970’s.
  • #6 The main characteristics of Rap music is that you have a Rapper/MC talking and rhyming over a beat on a microphone. The music is usually provided by the DJ who plays the music on vinyl records. The DJ also scratches the records while performing. Rap music is said to be music from the streets.
  • #7 A Rap Band includes the DJ who plays records on two turntables and the Rappers/MC’s who raps on the microphone.
  • #9 Jazz got its start in New Orleans in 1895.
  • #10 The main characteristics of jazz is that it is like a “Musical Conversation” between multiple instruments. Each of the musicians would take turns improvising (making something up as you go/unrehearsed/freestyling). Jazz is mostly instrumental.
  • #11 A Jazz Band includes a drummer, trombone player, trumpet player, clarinet/sax player, banjo player, bass player, and a piano player.
  • #13 Gospel Music started in the Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chicago, Illinois in the 1930’s by Thomas A. Dorsey.
  • #14 The characteristics of Gospel Music: Being sacred, meaning the subject matter is about being connected with God or it is dedicated to a religious purpose. You hear singing from a choir. Gospel music is intended to be sung in a church.
  • #15 A Gospel Band includes a drummer, guitar player, bass player, an organist, and a piano player.
