Song- Like a boy by Ciara
Why I chose the song..
Like A boy by Ciara is a very well composed and
produced song that speaks about gender roles
surrounding relationships and society. I chose
this song because I feel like it perfectly
represents a protest against double standards in
gender roles and I feel through narrative I can
accentuate the powerful message of the song..
My concept
This song exists within the R&B and hip-
hop genre. My music video will
incorporate a lot of R&B and hip-hop
music video genre conventions. Such as;
black and white, minor chorography,
close up shots of the singer. I want my music video to have a narrative and
for the narrative to focus on and foreground
gender inequality and double standards. I
want. I want it to feature a relationship where
there is a lot of disagreement and conflict and
make them act the opposite of their gender
stereotypes and then at the end the roles get
reversed back to show how absurd they are.
reality of the situation and then the woman leaves.
Why I chose my concept.
I chose my concept because I think it well represents the song.
Music videos that exist within the genre usually have a
narrative that goes with the themes of the song or the lyrics as
well as a choreography. I felt that to infiltrate themes of gender
inequality and double standard through the portrayal of protest
in the form of role reversal and then to have the moral be that
you shouldn’t let what society expects of you to define you,
went really well with the message of the song which purely just
brought awareness to this issue. I also thought that through
this concept and the characters portraying the narrative; I
could well represent gender and race because of intersectional
issues and inequality and double standard exists within race as
well, however this would be a minor theme that isn’t very
foregrounded and more just slightly embedded. I chose my
concept because I think it well executes the message.
