2. MGMT - Kids
The video is edited to suit the way the song goes. For example, the song has a long, slow introduction
and this correlates with the opening of the video. The narrative only begins when the song actually
begins. The video uses both narrative and performance, it uses a combination of ‘real life’ and animation
to tell a story with a brief appearance of the band singing the song. The narrative is not simple which is
used to keep the viewer interested and will encourage audiences to keep watching until they understand.
The visuals of the video are asynchronous to the titles connotations. The visuals have connotations of
horror which is not what an audience naturally associates with ‘kids’. The band make only a brief
appearance about halfway through the video to give a brief visual performance.

3. The Strokes – Last Nite
The video is solely the band performing the song in a stage environment, with only subtle subliminal
images appearing at certain points. Andrew Goodwin’s theory of Star image appears to be considered,
as the lead singer performs the song in a stereotypical fashion for a rock song. The way he swings the
microphone around as he sings for example is what an audience commonly associates with an Indie
Rock band. The performance is what largely attracts the audience to both the song and video as it is
more exciting anf entertaining than if the band were still and boring. Many bands and videos use the
stereotypical rock band performance as a way to sell the song and video.

4. Arctic Monkeys – Do I wanna
know?
The video is solely narrative and features no performance from the band. Andrew Goodwin’s theory about lyrics
to visuals appears to be considered as lyric meaning seems to be expressed through the visuals of the video,
Goodwin described this as illustrating the lyrics. The video may do this as it is the most obvious way to portray
lyrics to an audience. However, it is difficult to identify technical aspects such as camerawork etc. because the
video is animated.

5. The Killers – Mr Brightside
The video features a mixture of band performance and narrative. The technical aspects surrounding the
video make up the genre and context of the song. For example, the positioning of the band and the
instruments they are using makes it obvious the song will be of a rock/ alternative rock nature, before the
song has even begun. The speed of the edit also matches the tempo of the song, which makes it easier to
view for the audience. Steve Archer came up with the theory that the pace of the video comes with the
genre of the song, and this theory is supported through Mr Brightside and other rock and alternative rock
music videos.
