Indie rock originated in the UK and US in the 1980s and is extremely diverse with subgenres like indie pop and lo-fi. The term indie rock describes the small, low-budget independent labels that release the music and the do-it-yourself attitude of involved bands and artists. While distribution deals are sometimes made, these independent labels and bands try to retain autonomy to explore less mainstream sounds and subjects.
