3. FOREWORD
Founder of Multicultural Apprenticeship
Awards and Pathway Group
IT’S that glorious time of year again!
So, in extending a warm welcome, I hope tonight brings some fun and enjoyment to everyone, as we
celebrate our apprentices, learning providers, and of course all the employers ranging from private,
public and charitable sectors, who together recognise and truly back the impact of apprenticeship
programmes.
Thanks to the commitment of so many people, who have given their time and support; our sponsors,
partners, ambassadors and of course our judges whose task gets harder with each passing year, we
are able to gather here and celebrate all the winners.
This year we celebrated Social Mobility Awareness Day with the launch of our rebranded Multicultural
Apprenticeship Awards as well as the Multicultural Apprenticeship Alliance, that took place at our
event headline sponsor Pearson’s head office in central London. I, alongside the team were proud to
be able to share the journey that we have been on; the challenges, the changes, the successes that
originally began in 2016 with The Asian Apprenticeship Awards which later evolved into The BAME
Apprenticeship Awards and now form the awards as you see them today.
The year 2022 also saw the launch of our well-received and now a flagship event; the Festival of
Apprenticeships, a combination of a roadshow and online events – exhibiting, showcasing, and
promoting all things apprenticeships which you will be hearing more about going into next year.
My sincere appreciation to all the team collectively who as before, work tirelessly to make this event
happen and ensure it goes from strength to strength. Thank you sincerely also to everyone else who
has contributed one way or another to putting this event together, these awards wouldn’t be possible
without you all.
Even though the awards name has evolved we remain steadfast on its purpose, which is celebrating
the talent and diversity in apprenticeships.
I would like to finish off and request that this evening bring some light into the darkening days of late
autumn and to everyone here I say: enjoy, YOU deserve it!
Thank you!

5. FOREWORD
Senior Vice President for Vocational
Qualifications & Training at Pearson
As the world’s leading learning company, Pearson is once again proud to support the 2022
Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards. As we look to the future of work, we need to ensure that
apprentices continue to develop their talent to meet the needs of existing and emerging sectors.
It is so important, with awards such as these, to highlight not only the importance and value of
an apprenticeship, but also the diverse range of learners who are entering the workforce and
contributing to economies and businesses as a result.
The concept of apprenticeships has been around for hundreds of years, but the modern version
has a crucial role to play in these changing times, offering an opportunity to help people kickstart
their career, reskill or upskill, in a shifting landscape. As well as providing apprenticeship
solutions for employers, since 2017, Pearson UK has been offering apprenticeships to support
our own talent pipeline – with over 300 colleagues taking courses (apprenticeships) at Advanced,
Higher or Degree/Master levels. It’s been a pleasure to see these colleagues thrive and excel, and
the positive impact they have had in developing career aspirations, confidence and skills is clear.
At Pearson we serve customers in nearly 200 countries with digital content, assessments,
qualifications and data, with 20,000 employees committed to creating enriching learning
experiences designed for real-life impact. Whether it’s at home, on the move, in the classroom or
in the workplace, learning is the key to improving life chances.
Apprenticeships, in particular, offer a diverse range of learners a route into exciting careers in
key sectors. That’s why we look forward to taking this moment each year to celebrate those
inspiring individuals, who have worked hard to overcome adversity to achieve their goals through
apprenticeships.
I’d like to offer my congratulations to all the winners and nominees today - we hope you enjoy
your special moment of recognition.
Best wishes

22. Apprenticeships have become more and more important to our economy. The need to rapidly
up-skill the next generation of industry leaders has proven to be a success in delivering not
only for the apprentices but for businesses and the economy. In some multicultural British
communities sadly, there is a stigma attached to apprenticeships and it is seen as something
lesser than a degree or getting into employment straight away.

Diversity and inclusion are fundamental to stimulate the growth of any successful company.
Apprenticeships are a very valuable entry point for fresh, young, diverse talent and a good
tool for improving social mobility. Apprenticeships can create career paths, as we saw with
the WPP Fellowship programme, and strengthen the talent pipeline from apprentice to the
top levels of any company. These awards identify strong role models in the industry and
showcase great talent from all backgrounds. Congratulations to all the finalists and winners.
SIR MARTIN SORRELL - FOUNDER EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN OF S4 CAPITAL
I was delighted to read about the continued success of The Multicultural Apprenticeship
Awards since their launch in 2016, and to read about the background to the project and
your achievements since. I applaud your commitment to recognising, highlighting and
celebrating apprenticeship successes, and in addressing the challenge of encouraging
multicultural British communities to participate in apprenticeship schemes. Celebrating
the best of multicultural British apprentices, as well as their employers and trainers, will
inspire others and raise the profile of apprenticeships, which in turn will help achieve an
increase in multicultural apprentices.

I’m honoured to support The Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards. I started off my career

apprenticeships and these awards are a perfect opportunity to do so.

The Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards are about giving recognition to top employers
and shining a light on those who are delivering exceptional programmes. The
Apprenticeship Diversity Champions Network is about doing just that. The ADCN is a
Network of employers who are going above and beyond to make positive changes for
apprenticeship diversity amongst employers and encourages more people from under-
represented groups to consider apprenticeships.
DAME CAROLYN FAIRBAIRN DBE – FORMER DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF CBI
The Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards, now in their seventh year, are a great way to
celebrate the talent and diversity of learners in our country. With diversity increasingly
seen as a key driver of high performance in businesses, it is vitally important that the
great careers that apprenticeships offer are available to every community and seen
as important. The awards help us to celebrate success and build the reputation of
apprenticeships as a fantastic option for any young person.

Apprenticeships offer an invaluable path to a successful career. The Multicultural
Apprenticeship Awards are an acknowledgement of the success and achievement of
apprentices and a celebration of the diversity of the UK workforce. It is crucial to the future
success of our economy that we remain open to every community and provide high-quality
training opportunities for people of all backgrounds. The learners who have benefited from
apprenticeship training and whose achievements are being recognised by these awards are
a marker for the value of vocational training and the talent within Britain.

I strongly believe that more needs to be done to showcase the fantastic opportunities that
an apprenticeship can offer all young people, and that is why I am excited to be working
with the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards. I hope that we can unravel some of the
myths that exist and inspire more young people, from all backgrounds, to consider an

NEIL CARBERRY - CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF RECRUITMENT

For too long technical learning delivered through an apprenticeship has been seen as
the second choice. Yet we know now that many apprenticeships deliver better career
outcomes than degrees from the best universities. And I am always impressed by how
many former apprentices make up the leadership groups of some of the UK’s largest firms.
Apprenticeships have the added bonus of being much greater engines of social mobility
than other forms of learning – often taking young people at 16 or 18 from less well-off
backgrounds and propelling them into a career with a sense of purpose, and a good income.
For all these reasons, it is vital we celebrate the success stories, inspire firms to do more
and sell apprenticeships to more young people. In a short period of time, the Multicultural
Apprenticeship Awards have done all three, with increasing effects.

35. Huge congratulations to all nominees
and winners from Amazing Apprenticeships
and The Genie Programme
As early careers professionals it’s moments like these that really bring our work to life.
Recognition of talent, rewarding success and the opportunity to appreciate the moment.
We work with motivated individuals from leading businesses to develop knowledge, broaden
perspective, identify opportunity and gain the confidence and conviction to change how their
organisation attracts, supports and develops talented apprentices.
If you are passionate about social mobility, equality, diversity and inclusion get in touch with the team
to see how The Genie Programme can help you develop your EDI strategy, and become a changemaker
within your business.
www.amazingapprenticeships.com @amazingappsUK
“It’s just brilliant. I was so excited before the programme started, and it has
delivered. It’s making me think about things that I’ve just not had time to give
headspace to before. It’s given me the structure and the time I needed to dig into
all of these issues more.” - Sharon Blyfield OBE, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners
The Genie Programme empowers apprenticeship professionals to understand the social and business
impact that can be achieved by widening such opportunity to as diverse a talent pool as possible.
