2. We all recognise that for the success of businesses and therefore the economy and the country as a whole,
we have to be able to draw upon a skilled and motivated workforce. It is also clear that our apprentices are
vital to providing these skills. However, there are not enough of them and especially not enough from the
British Asian communities. Therefore, the challenge for us is how to address this issue. Our aspiration is
that the Asian Apprenticeship Awards will make an important contribution by raising awareness, celebrating
success and inspiring others.
The Awards would not be possible without the vision and support of many people. This includes the core
team, judges and ambassadors who have given their time and effort for the cause, as well our sponsors and
partners who have backed us with this initiative. Most of all we need to thank the excellent apprentices that
have taken part and the businesses and organisations that employ and support them.
Sincere and hearty congratulations to all the finalists and winners tonight, enjoy
your special evening.
Thank You

WELCOME
A WORD FROM THE FOUNDER & CHAIR
Welcome and thank you for your participation and contribution to the
2nd Annual Asian Apprenticeship Awards.
The aim of the awards is to celebrate and showcase the best of
British Asian Apprentices and the people that employ and train them.
In doing this, we hope that we will encourage more young British
Asians to consider apprenticeships and more employers to provide
opportunities to benefit from the skills that apprentices bring.
Apprenticeships provide value for individuals, businesses and the
economy.
There is a universal commitment in the UK of being able to extend
opportunities for everyone regardless of their race, gender or
religion. In this respect, a number of government targets have been
placed to improve the labour market chances for all. These include
increasing the quantity of apprenticeships taken on by young people
deriving from BAME backgrounds by 20% and increasing BAME
employment by another 20%, by the year 2020.
The Asian Apprenticeship Awards are all about doing something
practical to make a positive difference. We believe at least in a small
way that we have made a difference and will continue to do so by
highlighting, recognising and celebrating apprenticeship success
with both individuals, employers and learning providers that support
them.

FOREWORD
SUPPORT FROM THE NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP SERVICE
Sue Husband
Director of
National Apprenticeship Service
I am so pleased that the National Apprenticeship Service is
supporting the Asian Apprenticeship Awards, recognising and
celebrating the talent and diversity among apprentices within the
BAME community and the great work of enlightened employers and
learning providers.
Over time we see employers thinking differently about the make-up
of their workforces and this is work that needs to continue. And we
know the way young people are thinking about apprenticeships is
changing. The excitement of gaining transferable skills – and crucial
industry knowledge and experience - is positively impacting the lives
of so many people.
No matter who you are, or where you are from, or what career you
want to undertake, an apprenticeship could help you achieve what
you want – in your career and in your life. Apprenticeships are for
everyone.
To those employers at the Asian Apprenticeship Awards who don’t
currently have an apprentice, I would encourage you to join the
thousands of employers utilising the skills of apprentices - in a broad
range of sectors from nuclear to fashion, law, banking and defence –
and to consider recruiting an apprentice today.
And if you are considering what to do next in your career, an
apprenticeship could be for you. Applying is easy.
Visit GOV.UK and search ‘Find an apprenticeship’ – where you will find apprenticeship opportunities all the
way through to degree level.
It is crucial that we continue to widen participation in apprenticeships from across this diverse community.
By unleashing the potential, vibrancy and talent of all, we can make sure that our workforce reflects the
customers we serve and the communities we operate in.
Enjoy these awards and celebrate the success, drive and determination of apprentices, employers and
training providers as they are recognised for being the best in their category.
I personally congratulate each and every one of them for their brilliant
achievements!
Thank you
Sue Husband

Dr Rami Ranger is a well-known and highly successful entrepreneur
in the UK. He started his business life with £2 and an old type writer
in a shed back in 1987 and felt very humbled and privileged to be
heading a business with an annual turnover of in excess of £200
million and operating in 130 countries.
He came to the UK in 1971 to study law expecting the ‘streets to be
paved with gold’ but when found that he could not take forward his
ambition and took the only job available, which was cleaning cars.
His philosophy with that job like, everything else he has done, was to
make sure he did it well in order to ‘stand out from the rest.’ His view
is if you cannot do a small job well then how can you be trusted with
a big one?
Other jobs followed including working for Kentucky Fried Chicken, the
electrical retailer Dixons and running a family convenience store, off
licence and Post Office. But the big change for him came in 1987 He
started his business which has since gone from strength to strength
and now has been awarded five consecutive Queen’s Awards for
Dame Asha Khemka DBE
Committee. She is also the Skills Lead for the Midlands Engine for Growth and Chair of the Skills Group.

education developments between the UK and India, overseeing numerous partnerships and establishing
alliances with key Indian stakeholders. In 2015 she was instrumental in securing funding for UK colleges to
work with 12 Indian Polytechnics supporting the development of Community Colleges. She has accompanied
several Ministerial delegations to India joining the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Education
Ministers in recent missions.

Enterprise as well as one for Exporting. Dr Rami Ranger is still fortunate enough to work hard and with no
plans to retire. He now spends more time on community based work including a leading role with the Princes
Trust helping young people. He believes that Apprenticeships offer a great opportunity for people to earn
and learn and there is a huge job to be done ‘educating’ young people, their parents and employers about the
value of apprentices.

I was delighted to learn about the awards – it is great that you are bringing
together BME Asian apprentices, businesses and providers to celebrate their
successes.
I strongly believe that more needs to be done to showcase the fantastic
opportunities that an apprenticeship can offer all young people and that is why I
am excited to be working with the Asian Apprenticeship Awards. I hope that by
showcasing the Apprentice of the Year at The Skills Show we can unravel some
of the myths that exist and inspire more young people, from all backgrounds, to
consider an apprenticeship as a route to a successful and rewarding career.
These Awards are excellent! Young people with self-esteem, self respect and a
ticket they know will set them on a path of realisation of aspiration, will be the
immediate beneficiaries of the aura and esteem these Awards give the Asian
Community, but our Country and our City will be the long-term beneficiary and
that is a wonderful thing.
Apprenticeships have become more and more important to our economy. The
need to rapidly up-skill the next generation of industry leaders has proven to
be a success delivering not only for the apprentices but for businesses and
the economy. In the Asian Community sadly, there is a stigma attached to
apprenticeships and it is seen as something lesser than a degree or getting into
employment straight away.
The Asian Apprenticeship Awards are about giving recognition to top employers,
and shining a light on those who are delivering exceptional programmes. The
Apprenticeship Diversity Champions Network, launched earlier this year, is also
about doing just that. The ADCN is a Network of employers who are going above
and beyond to make positive changes for apprenticeship diversity.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT OUR GUEST SPEAKER
Charlie, who left school at 15 to do a plumbing apprenticeship, is the
Managing Director of Pimlico Plumbers with a business employing more
than 300 people and became Britain’s first millionaire plumber.
He is a great example of an apprentice to became an executive.
He started his journey when he left school at 15 to take up an
apprenticeship in plumbing which years later led to him setting up his
own company.
Apprentice training is part of raising the status and standing of
plumbers. He is unhappy that anyone can call themselves a plumber
and would also like greater regulation of plumbing including licensing.
Charlie Mullins, who was brought up on a London council estate, has
come a long way. He has advised Government, including former Prime
Minister David Cameron and Chancellor of the Exchequer George
Osborne.
He is a great believer in young people and a champion of
apprenticeships. Charlie is a Patron of the Prince’s Trust and has come
up with something that he calls ‘The Pimlico Apprenticeship School’ that
he has put to Government and believes this would help to dramatically
cut youth unemployment.
