We’re really just one person serving another, but we happen to do
it over eight million times a day. And just like the customers and
communities we serve, not one of us is the same. While we each
have our own stories and our own strengths, we do share a single,
common goal: to always be at our best. Whether we’re providing
career training or offering advancement opportunities, we empower
our associates to pursue careers that ignite their passions and
encourage them to create their own stories. Because at Compass
Group, your passions are our passions, your story is our story, and
we are at our best when you are at yours.

diverse thoughts... inclusive culture...
G A R Y G R E E N
Since publishing our last Diversity & Inclusion Report in 2013, our
business landscape has changed. We’ve gone from serving six million
meals a day, to serving over eight million; our workforce has grown from
200,000 associates in North America to nearly 240,000; we’ve retained
and won amazing client contracts, while technology innovations are
shaping the future of food and support services.
Our industry is evolving and we’re growing with it, but one thing will
never change at Compass Group - people will always be at the heart of
our business. Each and every individual plays a key role in the growth and
legacy of our company. That’s why we work hard every day to build an
inclusive workplace that attracts, retains and develops the best talent.
We are family of companies and experiences known for our great people,
our great service and our great results. Respecting and appreciating
differences, while recognizing and rewarding inclusion defines the
Compass culture. Our culture enables us to deliver on that promise to our
clients, guests and the community-at-large every single day.
I am very proud of our people and want to share their stories with you.
Best Regards,
Gary R. Green, CEO

What makes Compass Group an interesting place to work is the lack of monotony, the encouragement of
opinions and a genuine interest in what makes you tick and what makes you happy. I began with Compass
14 years ago as a midnight supervisor with Crothall and after advancing to senior management, I had the
opportunity to move across sector lines where I am now a regional vice president for SSC. Along the way
I have been exposed to a ton of talented people within the organization - the best of the best - and have
participated in countless networking opportunities. It is hard to identify just one person who has helped
me on my career path. There are just too many to name. Currently I am on the Board of the Leadership
Legacy Network where everyone has a different professional background, and as a member of the SSC
Diversity Action Council, I witness first-hand Compass Group’s commitment to inclusion not only in
cultures, races, backgrounds and preferences, but most importantly, in perspectives. I don’t know what is
next on my career path, but I do know that my goal is to be the best each day.

I describe Compass Group as having ‘the magic of the multiplier.’ During my 20-plus years with Compass
Group, I am continuously astonished by the extraordinary breadth and expertise within each of our specialized
sectors. Multiply that with the exceptional array of career opportunities within each, and the end result is the
magic of unlimited professional possibility. At Compass, you can start in one sector, transition to another
to learn a new industry or find yourself delving into a new career challenge. I am grateful to be a product
of this magic. Each time I raised my hand to tackle a new challenge the organization responded. Through
determination coupled with a strong network of trusted sponsors, I have carved a rewarding career path.
Compass Group invested in my success through access to executive leadership programs that helped me identify
professional challenges, and address them head on. I’m now in a new role, CEO, and I hope to continue our
legacy of investing in each other’s success.

OUR ZERO TOLERANCE DISCRIMINATION AND HARASSMENT POLICY
Compass Group is committed to providing a work environment for all associates that is free from discrimination and harassment
based on gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, color, disability, age, pregnancy, childbirth or any related condition, national
origin, veteran status, genetic information or any other unlawful factor. We believe an inclusive and welcoming work environment
helps to attract and retain the best talent to better serve our clients and guests across all 50 states where we do business. To that end
we support public policies and legislation that support nondiscrimination.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITY STATEMENT
Compass Group is a diverse growth-oriented organization. Our goal is to improve the quality of work life by using
fair and consistent treatment and providing equal growth opportunities for ALL associates. EOE & AA Employer M/F/D/V.
The thing I appreciate most about working with Compass Group is the direct contact you have
with senior management; that open communication means the most to me. That general support,
along with the help from my own mentors, has been instrumental in guiding me to each new
level, from temporary associate to supervisor to management. Compass is excellent at recognizing
the unique skill sets of associates and presenting opportunities that best match their identified
strengths. As an openly gay man, I have always felt comfortable and have witnessed the company’s
natural acceptance of differences; that has not always been the case in my life. But here, no matter
your age, race, religion, or preferences, you can move ahead if you’re willing to invest in yourself
through training and put in the work. The playing field truly is level, and I’m grateful for that.

From classroom presentations to career fairs and on-campus chef demonstrations,
Resource Network’s Campus Programs build relationships with universities and colleges
across the United States. We search for the most promising higher education graduates
who bring fresh ideas and unique talents to our organization.
COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIPS
Johnson & Wales
Johnson & Wales University (JWU) and Compass Group enjoy a long-
standing partnership helping each of us to grow. The highlight of our
partnership is our externship program which exposes faculty to industry
trends and business practices so they may better inform students and alumni
of the opportunities available.
Additionally, we partner with the JWU Veterans Resource Group to provide
insights on how veterans experiences translate to our company culture and
business needs and to better understand the challenges they face when
transitioning into the workforce.
Berea College
Compass Group recently established a relationship with Berea College in Kentucky. Berea offers a
four-year Tuition Promise Scholarship to all of its students who cannot otherwise afford a high-quality,
residential education. Students receive a unique campus experience through Berea’s labor program that
complements academic learning and builds community.

HIRING OUR HEROES
We believe veterans possess the skill, experience and team focus to help us grow our
organization today and in the years to come. Canteen has committed to hiring 500 veterans
and military spouses within the next five years in collaboration with Hiring Our Heroes, a
nationwide initiative that provides insight into effective recruiting and onboarding strategies
as well as opportunities to connect with transitioning service members.

One of things I appreciate most about working for Compass Group is having the opportunity to see the
end result of everything we focus on. There is nothing more beneficial than always seeing the needle move
no matter the project. I travel a lot in my position and everywhere I go there is a can-do attitude and a level
of compassion for others unlike anything I have seen anywhere else. It starts with our leadership and is
carried throughout. There is a willingness to invest in talent and provide the technological resources to help
associates do their best work. Throughout my 15 years here, I have received many opportunities to stretch
and grow through special projects. For instance, I had the opportunity to move back to my native country
of Mexico for two years and establish a human resources strategy. And because I am bilingual, I have also
been called upon to support openings in Puerto Rico. In fact, my wife and I are very interested in returning
to the international arena. It would be great to be assigned to Latin America, Spain or an emerging market.
Thanks to our focus on continued growth, that is a real possibility.
VETERANS ASSOCIATE RESOURCE GROUP
In 2013, Compass Group USA launched the Veterans Associate Resource Group (VARG).
This dedicated unit of associates shares the goal of promoting veteran recruitment,
providing growth opportunities, honoring military service and elevating our success
through the use of their unique skill sets and cultural insights. We are proud to provide
meaningful employment opportunities that empower these brave men and women to thrive
and advance in this next phase of their careers.

People, personalities, and of course, the food – that’s what I enjoy most about working here. There is no doubt
that we work hard, but we definitely have a lot of fun doing it. One thing I enjoy each year is a holiday party
organized by hourly associates at one of our independent schools. Everyone brings a dish from his or her home
country to share. The food is amazing as are the stories. There is so much we can learn from one another; our
collective stories make us stronger as a company. In my 21 years with Flik, I have found that you have to knock
on doors in order to open them. There are a lot of great relationships and opportunities to be had; you just have
to be willing to put yourself out there. Get out into your community, both personal and professional, there is so
much to see and learn from the ever-changing world we live in and you can make a difference.

Some 14 years ago, Bon Appétit joined the Compass family. We came to the table with our brand of
visionary leadership, a passion for food and the habit of allowing our people great creative freedom.
Compass Group brought powerful purchasing systems, real HR programs, and the global strength to
open new markets to us. What we learned about each other was that we shared the commitment to
a diverse workforce and the development of people. My departments and teams are made up of men
and women from diverse backgrounds, and we are strengthened by our differences. In the workplace,
viewing a problem from multiple perspectives helps us get to solutions that “same thinkers” might
never achieve. Beyond that, spending nearly 30 years in a cultural melting pot has enlightened me,
opened the door to magnificent friendships and enriched my life. Today, I rely on Compass Group
resources to empower Bon Appétit and our people. My opportunities and effectiveness are enhanced
by such a global enterprise, but it will always be our people for whom I run to work each day and are
at the heart of our success.

I’m a mother of five and, for me, being a mom comes first. I have a child with autism
which means more specialized needs at school. It’s important for me to be present for
that and for him. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate having a schedule where I can
contribute my best at work and still have the flexibility to be involved with my child’s
needs. Because we are all working towards the same goal, a work-life balance is all the more

As a leader you have to set people up for success. This means providing them with the training and
development support they need. It means encouraging them to apply for stretch positions as they
come up. You have to invest in people in order for them to become invested in the organization.
I believe this because I have experienced it myself. Over the past 25 years with Compass Group,
my own managers have often seen in me things that I had not yet seen in myself. My talents were
cultivated and I had exciting opportunities to try new fields and move to new places. Constant
challenge and encouragement has been the theme throughout my story here as well as an emphasis
on potential and talent. After a decade of career and residential moves, I am now in a season of life
where my wife and I have decided to put down roots to raise our family. I can make that choice for
them because of the stability I enjoy at Compass Group. Now my off-hours are spent with my kids
playing lots of sports and participating in their after-school activities. Nothing could be better.

When I took a temporary position with Foodbuy while in college, little did I know that
it would lead to a career that has continued on for 12 years and counting! Thanks to the
encouragement of my then boss turned mentor, Barbara Conn, I managed to parlay that
part-time data entry position into a full-time position in creative services on the training
team. It was there that I really got my footing, found my professional voice and matured.
A few years later, I seized the opportunity to prove my marketing abilities through contract
work and eventually was hired on as director of marketing and communications for
TouchPoint. I spent three great years growing that role and received consistent support
through internal and external training opportunities. I really appreciate Compass Group’s
willingness to invest in me and my career. Most recently, my husband and I wanted to

When I think about Compass Group, the phrase “The Power of Change” comes to mind. After
spending 11 successful years in marketing, I just transitioned to a new challenge, entering the field of
finance and I couldn’t be more excited. From the outside it might seem crazy for someone with my
background to make this change. But even as a marketer I have always loved numbers and analytics.
To have the opportunity to make a huge shift this late in my career speaks to the power of Compass.
I don’t know too many companies that allow this type of transition. As an African-American female I
also appreciate that I am able to see people like me reflected throughout the organization. This helps
me feel like they understand me a little better and ensures that others like me do not get lost within
the cracks. As a founding member of Compass’ first Diversity and Inclusion Action council and an
advisory board member for the Leadership Legacy Network I have the opportunity to continue to
shape the organization and impact the growth of future leaders.

I joined Canteen three years ago after working for a competitor. The thing that
struck me most is the way this organization puts its people first and respects
individual talent. Some companies may promote it but they’re ruthless behind
the scenes. Here your talent is what will bring you forward. You are given the
autonomy to make key decisions and personal growth is a priority. We have this
great opportunity to learn from one another and we are encouraged to do so. Here
in New Jersey where I am based, we have a large Dominican population and I am
learning a lot about their culture through their food. It’s been a lot of fun and helps
us connect on a different level. I also have an employee from Turkey who I really
enjoy swapping childhood stories with over food from his country. And while I
work hard, I also enjoy a great work-life balance; I have not had this with other

That pretty much sums up my career path so far. I began in operations with Foodbuy where I oversaw millions
of food and beverage transactions each year. After six years in that position, I was afforded the opportunity to
change disciplines and sectors moving into sales with a focus on senior living communities. I followed that
position with another leap to TouchPoint where I oversaw field support services including communications,
training, and customer experience. Most recently, I have had the opportunity to pull from my varied
experiences and move into operations overseeing food and environmental services. I am so grateful to Compass
Group for taking a big chance on me - not once, not twice, but over and over again. I have been encouraged
to take risks throughout my career. I have always felt supported by gifted company mentors and received the
training I needed. By having the opportunity to work in different parts of an organization, you are able to pull
from different perspectives to approach challenges in new ways.

My grandfather once told me that in order to be a great leader you have to look outside of yourself.
You have to instead seek to help others identify their gifts and build upon them. As an organization this
is exactly what Compass Group does. We help individuals thrive. There is a story I love to share about
an associate I met at one of our units. Her name is Rosanna and she began as a salad prep cook. Early on
it was obvious she had a passion for hospitality and just has this wonderful personality. I always say that
our front-line employees, those that have the last interaction with customers, are the ones who leave the
lasting impression for a multi-billion dollar company. It’s quite a responsibility! Rosanna excelled at this
and we helped her enroll in our Global University for Lifelong Learning (GULL) program to help further
her development. Today she runs our most profitable unit as a successful manager. Compass has helped
her not only advance in her career but has given her the tools to make her family’s life better. These are the
stories that matter to me. I started as a pot washer and have steadily worked my way up throughout my
career. Today I am the division president of Eurest. I always want to give back to help others do the same.
Outside of work I am heavily involved with The Children’s Miracle Network and help raise funds for the
organization each year. I believe that when everyone contributes something everything gets better.

I was always told to “be yourself” and being myself has propelled me to where I am today. In fact, the more I stay
true to myself, the higher I move within Compass Group and life. I love the limitless opportunities available here
to women of color like myself and who have backgrounds like mine. Ten years ago I was on food stamps after the
candy factory where I worked closed down. With only a high school diploma, I decided to try a new path so I
could better provide for my family. I enrolled in a Culinary Training Program at The Chicago Culinary Depository
and after graduation and some work experience, I was offered a position at Chartwells. Today, after five promotions
in a little over five years, I am humbled and thankful to say that I now manage over 450 associates. I’m currently
working towards a regional VP role and Compass Group has made this possible through their willingness to help
me with step-by-step training along the way, including the ADAPT program. Better yet, I now have the honor of
reaching back to help those like myself who just need a helping hand. I’m proud to say I have hired more than 30
fellow graduates from that same culinary training program that helped me less than a decade ago.

If I were to pick one phrase that defines my role at Thunderbird School of Global Management,
I would have to say it’s “Mom to the Rescue.” I’m a mother of three wonderful kids at home
and that role kind of spills into my work life, too. I love pitching in when others need my help
and even just being there as a listener to help solve problems. It brings me joy. My colleagues
are like family to me. At Thunderbird, we host executive education programs and I manage all
sorts of details. I guess you could say I’m the middleman and that means working with a lot
of changes and personalities. I started with Compass Group as a conference services aid and
quickly advanced to my current role, conferences services supervisor. With each new promotion
I needed to develop new leadership skills. Compass has provided me with training to fill in the
gaps, like education around managing different personality types and next up, inclusion. I also
enjoy regular chat sessions with my managers and never feel like I’m going at it alone. I want to
be a great leader and to do that I know I need great guidance.

I have been with Restaurant Associates since 1987 and what I enjoy most is the stability and the
plethora of career opportunities. I see chef friends of mine often struggle with the instability of the
restaurant industry and with hitting plateaus when they work for a single unit. This has never been
an issue for me here. I have had the opportunity to serve as the executive chef of an Italian restaurant
in Washington, D.C., oversee catering at The Kennedy Center of Performing Arts, work on special
sporting events like The Ryder Cup and serve as the executive chef for The Lincoln Center in New
York City. What’s most impressive is that I had all of these experiences within a single organization.
Today I’m enjoying my current role as director of culinary innovations where I work with 170 units
and have a lot of influence over what they produce. There are no real limitations on where I can take
this role or what I can do next. Living in NYC we are immersed in a melting pot of cultures and as
a chef, I see this every day, in our kitchens. Coming from a Japanese heritage, I know that we always
have the opportunity to learn from one another and by doing so, we become stronger as a whole.

SUPPLIER DIVERSITY
Through Foodbuy, our supplier diversity team casts a wide net to source suppliers that are either large or small, and/or are certified as
HUBZones, minority-owned, women-owned or veteran-owned. Having a well-rounded supplier base helps Compass Group better
anticipate the needs of the people we serve and to provide products and services that are specialized, competitively priced
and innovative.
FOODBUY
As the largest foodservice procurement organization in North America, Foodbuy is the sole sourcing partner for Compass Group USA.
Our tremendous purchase volume provides a great opportunity to support a strong supplier diversity program. Working closely with
our vetted suppliers, our team ensures that the products and services we source meet our high quality standards and broad
distribution needs.
The Foodbuy team is dedicated to:
+ Increasing the number of diverse suppliers that provide our customers
with goods and services
+ Helping M/WBE suppliers understand the business requirements to
become a nominated supplier to Compass Group and the other
committed customers of the Foodbuy organization
+ Ensuring that M/WBE business owners are treated fairly in the
qualification, proposal and contracting process
+ Providing information and support to all Foodbuy customers relative
to the availability of qualified M/WBE suppliers

Every day is a new day at Compass Group with new projects and new issues to tackle; nothing is
routine. Compass Group is a growth minded organization, and with that we always come across
new customer requirements and demands to support. In my role as senior sourcing director for
Foodbuy, I encounter diversity every day - in our client base, the suppliers from which we source,
the products we procure, and the associates we employ to make it all happen. In a single day
we might work to source everything from a simple burger patty to high-end Scottish salmon.
Whatever the customer demands, we work to not only provide but to provide the best. I really
appreciate how we are able to see the results of our efforts so rapidly. When I’m not procuring
new products, I enjoy traveling overseas and serving as the 2016 Chair of The Latin American
Chamber of Commerce (LACC) in Charlotte, North Carolina where I live. Compass Group
has been very supportive of both my role and of the LACC and I see firsthand how engaged the
organization is within our community. It continues to encourage me to stay engaged as well.

On any given day I may provide legal advice to internal clients in a wide variety of roles from
business developers to field operators to finance, marketing, and project managers. I’m exposed
to so many specialties and enjoy working for a growing company that hires people who are
the best at what they do. Working as an in-house attorney gives me the opportunity to apply
my knowledge and expertise in real world, day-to-day business settings. My advice does not
come from an ivory tower; it needs to interact closely with my internal client’s business goals
and needs. We each have a real opportunity to make a positive impact at Compass Group and
on each other. Someone who has made a positive impact on me personally is our CIO, Rob
Watkins. His organization, the Strategic Technology Group, is my main internal client. Rob
is an example of a knowledgeable and competent mentor and leader who truly cares about the
company and the people he works with.

I started with Compass Group as an intern shortly after college. That was over 10 years ago and I look
back with pride at the career I’ve made, and it is all due to the people. Whether I’m laughing with my
teammates or learning from others’ experience, I’ve always felt connected with the people and with the job.
With encouragement from my managers and company leaders, I’ve progressed from internal to external
communications including PR, crisis management and social media, and now, associate engagement. These
new opportunities have come and I’ve never stopped learning, and doors have always been open when
I needed help. Even beyond the day-to-day, I’ve been involved with major changes in the food industry
relating to farm animal welfare and sustainability in our supply chain. It’s gratifying that the company I’m a
part of shares my personal values and passions.

Compass Group’s commitment to diversity and inclusion translates to social justice and humanity. As
a first generation Italian-American citizen and as a Muslim, this commitment is incredibly important
to me. I understand the immigrant experience and how labelling individuals can stunt the growth of
an organization and society at large. Compass cares deeply about treating its employees with dignity,
respect and promoting the message of inclusion to ensure all associates have opportunities for growth,
development, and contribution. Some time ago I was approached by a colleague on DIAC who had
noticed that I had started wearing a headscarf (hijab) and instead of putting a label on me, she invited me
to give a presentation to the committee on the symbolism of the headscarf and the many misconceptions
associated with it. This is what I call dignity, respect and inclusion, and I am so proud to work here.

Everything we do starts with our great people and we are on a phenomenal journey together. Our family
of companies continues to grow and our workforce in North America is approaching 240,000 associates!
Through this journey, we remain focused on driving a culture where people love to come to work and can
reach their full potential.
For the past three years, Raj Pragasam has been leading our diversity & inclusion efforts as our Chief Inclusion Officer. Originally
from Sri Lanka, Raj joined Compass Group UK in 1979 and then joined Compass North America in 2001 to provide strategic
HR leadership for healthcare and support services. Since day one as CIO, Raj has approached the role with inclusivity as his highest
priority. Anyone who has met Raj will agree he is a force of nature. He’s a disruptor, a decision-maker and a champion for creating an
inclusive culture that empowers all associates. After 37 years of service, Raj has decided to “re-fire” in order to focus on multiple global
charitable organizations that are near and dear to his heart.
I am very pleased to welcome Cindy Noble as our new Chief Inclusion Officer.
Cindy is already a member of the Compass family; she leads HR for Levy Restaurants
and has over 20 years of service. After spending some time in operations early in her
career, Cindy gravitated towards the human resources side of the business. In her own
words, she was “recruited into recruiting” and this connected with her desire to help
others. Cindy’s passions are in mentoring, paying-it-forward and helping associates be
the best that they can be. Raj and Cindy will work closely to successfully transition
the position.
Please join me in congratulating and thanking Raj for leaving an unforgettable mark
on our organization and in welcoming Cindy and wishing her great success in her
new role. I look forward to the next steps in our diversity & inclusion evolution.
Best wishes,
Gary Snyder, Chief People Officer - Compass Group North America

While we each have our own stories and our own strengths, we do share a single, common goal: to always be at our best. Whether we’re providing career training or offering advancement opportunities, we empower our associates to pursue careers that ignite their passions and encourage them to create their own stories. • 3. G A R Y G R E E N Since publishing our last Diversity & Inclusion Report in 2013, our business landscape has changed. We’ve gone from serving six million meals a day, to serving over eight million; our workforce has grown from 200,000 associates in North America to nearly 240,000; we’ve retained and won amazing client contracts, while technology innovations are shaping the future of food and support services. Our industry is evolving and we’re growing with it, but one thing will never change at Compass Group - people will always be at the heart of our business. Each and every individual plays a key role in the growth and legacy of our company. That’s why we work hard every day to build an inclusive workplace that attracts, retains and develops the best talent. We are family of companies and experiences known for our great people, our great service and our great results. Respecting and appreciating differences, while recognizing and rewarding inclusion defines the Compass culture. Our culture enables us to deliver on that promise to our clients, guests and the community-at-large every single day. I am very proud of our people and want to share their stories with you. • 7. 13 What makes Compass Group an interesting place to work is the lack of monotony, the encouragement of opinions and a genuine interest in what makes you tick and what makes you happy. I began with Compass 14 years ago as a midnight supervisor with Crothall and after advancing to senior management, I had the opportunity to move across sector lines where I am now a regional vice president for SSC. Along the way I have been exposed to a ton of talented people within the organization - the best of the best - and have participated in countless networking opportunities. It is hard to identify just one person who has helped me on my career path. There are just too many to name. Currently I am on the Board of the Leadership Legacy Network where everyone has a different professional background, and as a member of the SSC Diversity Action Council, I witness first-hand Compass Group’s commitment to inclusion not only in cultures, races, backgrounds and preferences, but most importantly, in perspectives. I don’t know what is next on my career path, but I do know that my goal is to be the best each day. Multiply that with the exceptional array of career opportunities within each, and the end result is the magic of unlimited professional possibility. At Compass, you can start in one sector, transition to another to learn a new industry or find yourself delving into a new career challenge. I am grateful to be a product of this magic. Each time I raised my hand to tackle a new challenge the organization responded. Through determination coupled with a strong network of trusted sponsors, I have carved a rewarding career path. Compass Group invested in my success through access to executive leadership programs that helped me identify professional challenges, and address them head on. • 8. 14 15 OUR ZERO TOLERANCE DISCRIMINATION AND HARASSMENT POLICY Compass Group is committed to providing a work environment for all associates that is free from discrimination and harassment based on gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, color, disability, age, pregnancy, childbirth or any related condition, national origin, veteran status, genetic information or any other unlawful factor. We believe an inclusive and welcoming work environment helps to attract and retain the best talent to better serve our clients and guests across all 50 states where we do business. To that end we support public policies and legislation that support nondiscrimination. EQUAL OPPORTUNITY STATEMENT Compass Group is a diverse growth-oriented organization. Our goal is to improve the quality of work life by using fair and consistent treatment and providing equal growth opportunities for ALL associates. EOE & AA Employer M/F/D/V. The thing I appreciate most about working with Compass Group is the direct contact you have with senior management; that open communication means the most to me. That general support, along with the help from my own mentors, has been instrumental in guiding me to each new level, from temporary associate to supervisor to management. Compass is excellent at recognizing the unique skill sets of associates and presenting opportunities that best match their identified strengths. As an openly gay man, I have always felt comfortable and have witnessed the company’s natural acceptance of differences; that has not always been the case in my life. But here, no matter your age, race, religion, or preferences, you can move ahead if you’re willing to invest in yourself through training and put in the work. The playing field truly is level, and I’m grateful for that. FOSTER PAREN T // DRIVEN P ROFESSION AL // HOME DIY-ER { {ROBERT - S R . From classroom presentations to career fairs and on-campus chef demonstrations, Resource Network’s Campus Programs build relationships with universities and colleges across the United States. We search for the most promising higher education graduates who bring fresh ideas and unique talents to our organization. COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIPS Johnson & Wales Johnson & Wales University (JWU) and Compass Group enjoy a long- standing partnership helping each of us to grow. The highlight of our partnership is our externship program which exposes faculty to industry trends and business practices so they may better inform students and alumni of the opportunities available. Additionally, we partner with the JWU Veterans Resource Group to provide insights on how veterans experiences translate to our company culture and business needs and to better understand the challenges they face when transitioning into the workforce. Berea College Compass Group recently established a relationship with Berea College in Kentucky. Berea offers a four-year Tuition Promise Scholarship to all of its students who cannot otherwise afford a high-quality, residential education. There is nothing more beneficial than always seeing the needle move no matter the project. I travel a lot in my position and everywhere I go there is a can-do attitude and a level of compassion for others unlike anything I have seen anywhere else. It starts with our leadership and is carried throughout. There is a willingness to invest in talent and provide the technological resources to help associates do their best work. Throughout my 15 years here, I have received many opportunities to stretch and grow through special projects. For instance, I had the opportunity to move back to my native country of Mexico for two years and establish a human resources strategy. And because I am bilingual, I have also been called upon to support openings in Puerto Rico. In fact, my wife and I are very interested in returning to the international arena. It would be great to be assigned to Latin America, Spain or an emerging market. Thanks to our focus on continued growth, that is a real possibility. VETERANS ASSOCIATE RESOURCE GROUP In 2013, Compass Group USA launched the Veterans Associate Resource Group (VARG). This dedicated unit of associates shares the goal of promoting veteran recruitment, providing growth opportunities, honoring military service and elevating our success through the use of their unique skill sets and cultural insights. Everyone brings a dish from his or her home country to share. The food is amazing as are the stories. There is so much we can learn from one another; our collective stories make us stronger as a company. In my 21 years with Flik, I have found that you have to knock on doors in order to open them. We came to the table with our brand of visionary leadership, a passion for food and the habit of allowing our people great creative freedom. Compass Group brought powerful purchasing systems, real HR programs, and the global strength to open new markets to us. What we learned about each other was that we shared the commitment to a diverse workforce and the development of people. My departments and teams are made up of men and women from diverse backgrounds, and we are strengthened by our differences. In the workplace, viewing a problem from multiple perspectives helps us get to solutions that “same thinkers” might never achieve. Beyond that, spending nearly 30 years in a cultural melting pot has enlightened me, opened the door to magnificent friendships and enriched my life. Today, I rely on Compass Group resources to empower Bon Appétit and our people. This means providing them with the training and development support they need. It means encouraging them to apply for stretch positions as they come up. You have to invest in people in order for them to become invested in the organization. I believe this because I have experienced it myself. Over the past 25 years with Compass Group, my own managers have often seen in me things that I had not yet seen in myself. My talents were cultivated and I had exciting opportunities to try new fields and move to new places. Constant challenge and encouragement has been the theme throughout my story here as well as an emphasis on potential and talent. After a decade of career and residential moves, I am now in a season of life where my wife and I have decided to put down roots to raise our family. I can make that choice for them because of the stability I enjoy at Compass Group. Now my off-hours are spent with my kids playing lots of sports and participating in their after-school activities. Thanks to the encouragement of my then boss turned mentor, Barbara Conn, I managed to parlay that part-time data entry position into a full-time position in creative services on the training team. It was there that I really got my footing, found my professional voice and matured. A few years later, I seized the opportunity to prove my marketing abilities through contract work and eventually was hired on as director of marketing and communications for TouchPoint. I spent three great years growing that role and received consistent support through internal and external training opportunities. I began in operations with Foodbuy where I oversaw millions of food and beverage transactions each year. After six years in that position, I was afforded the opportunity to change disciplines and sectors moving into sales with a focus on senior living communities. I followed that position with another leap to TouchPoint where I oversaw field support services including communications, training, and customer experience. Most recently, I have had the opportunity to pull from my varied experiences and move into operations overseeing food and environmental services. I am so grateful to Compass Group for taking a big chance on me - not once, not twice, but over and over again. I have been encouraged to take risks throughout my career. I have always felt supported by gifted company mentors and received the training I needed. By having the opportunity to work in different parts of an organization, you are able to pull from different perspectives to approach challenges in new ways. d i v e r s i t y & i n c l u s i o n GOURM AN D // YOGI // GRAN DM OTHER 35

You have to instead seek to help others identify their gifts and build upon them. As an organization this is exactly what Compass Group does. We help individuals thrive. There is a story I love to share about an associate I met at one of our units. Her name is Rosanna and she began as a salad prep cook. Early on it was obvious she had a passion for hospitality and just has this wonderful personality. I always say that our front-line employees, those that have the last interaction with customers, are the ones who leave the lasting impression for a multi-billion dollar company. It’s quite a responsibility! Rosanna excelled at this and we helped her enroll in our Global University for Lifelong Learning (GULL) program to help further her development. Today she runs our most profitable unit as a successful manager. Compass has helped her not only advance in her career but has given her the tools to make her family’s life better. These are the stories that matter to me. I started as a pot washer and have steadily worked my way up throughout my career. Today I am the division president of Eurest. I always want to give back to help others do the same. Outside of work I am heavily involved with The Children’s Miracle Network and help raise funds for the organization each year. In fact, the more I stay true to myself, the higher I move within Compass Group and life. I love the limitless opportunities available here to women of color like myself and who have backgrounds like mine. Ten years ago I was on food stamps after the candy factory where I worked closed down. With only a high school diploma, I decided to try a new path so I could better provide for my family. I enrolled in a Culinary Training Program at The Chicago Culinary Depository and after graduation and some work experience, I was offered a position at Chartwells. Today, after five promotions in a little over five years, I am humbled and thankful to say that I now manage over 450 associates. I’m currently working towards a regional VP role and Compass Group has made this possible through their willingness to help me with step-by-step training along the way, including the ADAPT program. Better yet, I now have the honor of reaching back to help those like myself who just need a helping hand. I’m proud to say I have hired more than 30 fellow graduates from that same culinary training program that helped me less than a decade ago. I love pitching in when others need my help and even just being there as a listener to help solve problems. It brings me joy. My colleagues are like family to me. At Thunderbird, we host executive education programs and I manage all sorts of details. I guess you could say I’m the middleman and that means working with a lot of changes and personalities. I started with Compass Group as a conference services aid and quickly advanced to my current role, conferences services supervisor. With each new promotion I needed to develop new leadership skills. Compass has provided me with training to fill in the gaps, like education around managing different personality types and next up, inclusion. I also enjoy regular chat sessions with my managers and never feel like I’m going at it alone. I want to be a great leader and to do that I know I need great guidance. I see chef friends of mine often struggle with the instability of the restaurant industry and with hitting plateaus when they work for a single unit. This has never been an issue for me here. I have had the opportunity to serve as the executive chef of an Italian restaurant in Washington, D.C., oversee catering at The Kennedy Center of Performing Arts, work on special sporting events like The Ryder Cup and serve as the executive chef for The Lincoln Center in New York City. What’s most impressive is that I had all of these experiences within a single organization. Today I’m enjoying my current role as director of culinary innovations where I work with 170 units and have a lot of influence over what they produce. There are no real limitations on where I can take this role or what I can do next. Living in NYC we are immersed in a melting pot of cultures and as a chef, I see this every day, in our kitchens. Coming from a Japanese heritage, I know that we always have the opportunity to learn from one another and by doing so, we become stronger as a whole. • 27. 52 53 I started with Compass Group as an intern shortly after college. That was over 10 years ago and I look back with pride at the career I’ve made, and it is all due to the people. Whether I’m laughing with my teammates or learning from others’ experience, I’ve always felt connected with the people and with the job. With encouragement from my managers and company leaders, I’ve progressed from internal to external communications including PR, crisis management and social media, and now, associate engagement. These new opportunities have come and I’ve never stopped learning, and doors have always been open when I needed help. Even beyond the day-to-day, I’ve been involved with major changes in the food industry relating to farm animal welfare and sustainability in our supply chain. Compass cares deeply about treating its employees with dignity, respect and promoting the message of inclusion to ensure all associates have opportunities for growth, development, and contribution. Some time ago I was approached by a colleague on DIAC who had noticed that I had started wearing a headscarf (hijab) and instead of putting a label on me, she invited me to give a presentation to the committee on the symbolism of the headscarf and the many misconceptions associated with it. • 29. Everything we do starts with our great people and we are on a phenomenal journey together. Our family of companies continues to grow and our workforce in North America is approaching 240,000 associates! Through this journey, we remain focused on driving a culture where people love to come to work and can reach their full potential. For the past three years, Raj Pragasam has been leading our diversity & inclusion efforts as our Chief Inclusion Officer. Originally from Sri Lanka, Raj joined Compass Group UK in 1979 and then joined Compass North America in 2001 to provide strategic HR leadership for healthcare and support services. Since day one as CIO, Raj has approached the role with inclusivity as his highest priority. Anyone who has met Raj will agree he is a force of nature. He’s a disruptor, a decision-maker and a champion for creating an inclusive culture that empowers all associates. After 37 years of service, Raj has decided to “re-fire” in order to focus on multiple global charitable organizations that are near and dear to his heart. I am very pleased to welcome Cindy Noble as our new Chief Inclusion Officer. Cindy is already a member of the Compass family; she leads HR for Levy Restaurants and has over 20 years of service. After spending some time in operations early in her career, Cindy gravitated towards the human resources side of the business. In her own words, she was “recruited into recruiting” and this connected with her desire to help others. Cindy’s passions are in mentoring, paying-it-forward and helping associates be the best that they can be. Raj and Cindy will work closely to successfully transition the position. Please join me in congratulating and thanking Raj for leaving an unforgettable mark on our organization and in welcoming Cindy and wishing her great success in her new role. I look forward to the next steps in our diversity & inclusion evolution.
