It may seem to be a very different world with different concepts, terms, and techniques. Or is it? Lots of people still talk about having a data warehouse or several data marts across their organization. But what does that really mean today in 2016? How about the Corporate Information Factory (CIF), the Data Vault, an Operational Data Store (ODS), or just star schemas? Where do they fit now (or do they)? And now we have the Extended Data Warehouse (XDW) as well. How do all these things help us bring value and data-based decisions to our organizations? Where do Big Data and the Cloud fit? Is there a coherent architecture we can define? This talk will endeavor to cut through the hype and the buzzword bingo to help you figure out what part of this is helpful. I will discuss what I have seen in the real world (working and not working!) and a bit of where I think we are going and need to go in 2016 and beyond.

Stream processing is now at the forefront of many company strategies. Over the last couple of years we have seen streaming use cases explode and now proliferate the landscape of any modern business.
Use cases including digital transformation, IoT, real-time risk, payments microservices and machine learning are all built on the fundamental that they need fast data and they need it at scale.
Apache Kafka® has long been the streaming platform of choice, its origins of being dumb pipes for big data have long since been left behind and now it is the goto-streaming platform of choice.
Stream processing beckons as being the vehicle for driving those streams, and along with it brings a world of real-time semantics surrounding windowing, joining, correctness, elasticity, and accessibility. The ‘current state of stream processing’ walks through the origins of stream processing, applicable use cases and then dives into the challenges currently facing the world of stream processing as it drives the next data revolution.
Neil is a Technologist in the Office of the CTO at Confluent, the company founded by the creators of Apache Kafka. He has over 20 years of expertise of working on distributed computing, messaging and stream processing. He has built or redesigned commercial messaging platforms, distributed caching products as well as developed large scale bespoke systems for tier-1 banks. After a period at ThoughtWorks, he went on to build some of the first distributed risk engines in financial services. In 2008 he launched a startup that specialised in distributed data analytics and visualization. Prior to joining Confluent he was the CTO at a fintech consultancy.

On-line transaction processing (OLTP) database management systems (DBMSs) are a critical part of the operation of many large enterprises. These systems often serve time-varying workloads due to daily, weekly or seasonal fluctuations in demand, or because of rapid growth in demand due to a company’s business success. In addition, many OLTP workloads are heavily skewed to “hot” tuples or ranges of tuples. For example, the majority of NYSE volume involves only 40 stocks. To deal with such fluctuations, an OLTP DBMS needs to be elastic; that is, it must be able to expand and contract resources in response to load fluctuations and dynamically balance load as hot tuples vary over time. In this talk, I will present a system we built at MIT called P-Store, which uses predictive modeling to reconfigure the system in advance of predicted load changes. I will show that when running a real database workload, P-Store achieves comparable performance to a traditional static OLTP DBMS while using 50% fewer computing resources.

Comcast manages over 2 million miles of fiber and coax, and over 40 million in home devices. This “outside plant” is subject to adverse conditions from severe weather to power grid outages to construction-related disruptions. Maintaining the health of this large and important infrastructure requires a distributed, scalable, reliable and fast information system capable of real-time processing and rapid analysis and response. Using Apache Kafka and the Kafka Streams Processor API, Comcast built an innovative new system for monitoring, problem analysis, metrics reporting and action response for the outside plant.
In this talk, you’ll learn how topic partitions, state stores, key mapping, source and sink topics and processors from the Kafka Streams Processor API work together to build a powerful dynamic system. We will dive into the details about the inner workings of the state store—how it is backed by a Kafka “changelog” topic, how it is scaled horizontally by partition and how the instances are rebuilt on startup or on processor failure. We will discuss how these state stores essentially become like materialized views in a SQL database but are updated incrementally as data flows through the system, and how this allows the developers to maintain the data in the optimal structures for performing the processing. The best part is that the data is readily available when needed by the processors. You will see how a REST API using Kafka Streams “interactive queries” can be used to retrieve the data in the state stores. We will explore the deployment and monitoring mechanisms used to deliver this system as a set of independently deployed components.

These systems often serve time-varying workloads due to daily, weekly or seasonal fluctuations in demand, or because of rapid growth in demand due to a company’s business success. In addition, many OLTP workloads are heavily skewed to “hot” tuples or ranges of tuples. For example, the majority of NYSE volume involves only 40 stocks. To deal with such fluctuations, an OLTP DBMS needs to be elastic; that is, it must be able to expand and contract resources in response to load fluctuations and dynamically balance load as hot tuples vary over time. In this talk, I will present a system we built at MIT called P-Store, which uses predictive modeling to reconfigure the system in advance of predicted load changes. I will show that when running a real database workload, P-Store achieves comparable performance to a traditional static OLTP DBMS while using 50% fewer computing resources.

Comcast manages over 2 million miles of fiber and coax, and over 40 million in home devices. This “outside plant” is subject to adverse conditions from severe weather to power grid outages to construction-related disruptions. Maintaining the health of this large and important infrastructure requires a distributed, scalable, reliable and fast information system capable of real-time processing and rapid analysis and response. Using Apache Kafka and the Kafka Streams Processor API, Comcast built an innovative new system for monitoring, problem analysis, metrics reporting and action response for the outside plant.
In this talk, you’ll learn how topic partitions, state stores, key mapping, source and sink topics and processors from the Kafka Streams Processor API work together to build a powerful dynamic system. We will dive into the details about the inner workings of the state store—how it is backed by a Kafka “changelog” topic, how it is scaled horizontally by partition and how the instances are rebuilt on startup or on processor failure. We will discuss how these state stores essentially become like materialized views in a SQL database but are updated incrementally as data flows through the system, and how this allows the developers to maintain the data in the optimal structures for performing the processing. The best part is that the data is readily available when needed by the processors. You will see how a REST API using Kafka Streams “interactive queries” can be used to retrieve the data in the state stores. We will explore the deployment and monitoring mechanisms used to deliver this system as a set of independently deployed components.

The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
