Moving Beyond Disaster Recovery to IT Resilience

Editor's Notes

  • #4 This evolution is being driven by transformation – Digital transformation is happening – IDC predicts that by the end of next year, business will be spending in the trillions to digitize their operations (source: IDC prediction IDC FutureScape: Worldwide Digital Transformation 2018 Predictions) As I sit down with your peers, this is the type of transformation I’m seeing: Some transformations are about changes to the frontend experience with your customer (Netflix goes from DVD mail company to streaming). Other aspects of transformation are about business optimization - modernizing legacy IT infrastructure and technology to better protect the business and meet SLAs   Two ends of the spectrum, but both are transformation.
  • #5 Why is transformation happening now? We see three drivers: Our customers are looking to be more profitable and increase revenues, new technology is creating new competitors and the need to differentiate has never been greater, quickly implementing new technology to drive business value is key to success Customer expectations are higher today and to succeed in this digital world companies need to provide a superior customer experience. IT is no longer in the back room, but out front delivering the customer experience. Speed to market – not only does a company need to deliver a superior customer experience but deliver on their promises in a faster and more nimble way. They have to get to market faster and innovate to find new revenue streams - so they need to transform – technology enables transformation Ultimately – IT has moved from the back seat to be in the driver’s seat Use an example here.
  • #6 There are core elements to transformation that we see happen across our customers First, they are focused on minimizing the risk of business and brand disruption. They know they must ensure there is no downtime and they need to be ready to address any potential disruption. Second, they are making the move to modernize, to gain the agility needed to manage their data and apps and control costs. Businesses can’t be rooted in legacy systems and processes. Ultimately you want your teams focused on business-generating activity not on maintaining infrastructure. Finally – they are looking to cloud models to drive efficiencies. And looking for ways to simply, and to get in and out of the cloud effectively.
  • #7  There are two key challenges around IT transformation   The first is the changing IT landscape and the speed at which it is changing. Data is your most important asset – it’s how you go fast and innovate – but how can you protect and do more with data while dealing with changing systems, software and technology. All this complexity can slow transformation down. The second challenge is the ever-increasing expectations of the customers experience and how you maximize the power of data, technology and your team to deliver on it.   Ultimately, if done right, IT is the Success Manager of the business. If IT delivers transformation the business succeeds by engaging the customer in a meaningful way.
  • #8 And now almost every app is integrated or connect with the customer experience and so we need to look at what being protected and how you’re protecting it. In the not so distant past: Protection was generally limited to back office mission critical applications. There was a narrow need for protection, and much was left under-protected, even key business services. That does not work today - Any application that delivers a business service and could potentially impact the customer experience requires protection against disruption. Today you need to look at ALL the applications and business services needed to run the business and to deliver a superior customer experience. By the way, we are talking about both internal and external customers. Sometimes the internal customers are even more demanding. Continuous Availability is the cornerstone of an Uninterrupted Customer Experience.
  • #9 Disruptions happen every day – there are bad disruptions and good disruptions – what do I mean by that? Unplanned – the “what if’s Unplanned disruptions are a drain on staff, time and budget. Handling unplanned outages needs to be simple, automated and able to cover 100% of business requirements while minimizing resource and process [On click] Planned IT must constantly evaluate and integrate new technologies into their operations, to keep pace with expectations and reduce costs. These business-driving initiatives, like migrations, moving to cloud or testing new software are necessary, but also disruptive. You need to be able to react more efficiently to the unplanned, so you have more time and resources to focus on the planned disruptions, those that drive innovation and business value. Optional content: In many cases 10% of the stack is be protected and your spending 80% of your time maintaining…when you really want to be focused overhere (gesture to planned side) (Click)
  • #10 You need to shift from reactive IT mode of operations to a proactive IT mode of operations, to a resilient-first mindset, where protection comes along with you as you evolve your operations and business… [On click]
  • #11 – To be protected in the event of ANY unplanned disruption and ready to drive the planned disruptions – that’s IT resilience
  • #12  [Read the Slide– IT Resilience is the ability To accelerate digital transformation and innovation by seamlessly adapting to new technology, while protecting the business and customers from disruptions. Notice I didn’t say anything about disaster recovery, because IT resilience is more than that – it’s about both unplanned – “traditional DR use cases” and planned. A reactive and proactive approach.
  • #13 But don’t take our word for it. Gartner recently recognized Zerto for meeting all of the 9 critical capabilities for IT Resilience in their December 2017 ITRO (IT Resilience Orchestration Automation) market guide. In a recently published Gartner SWOT on Zerto, they said that Zerto is a leading provider of enterprise disaster recovery and IT resilience management software for both virtualized datacenters and cloud. Protecting data and apps is core to Zerto, it’s in our name Zero RTO, Zero downtime, and that’s why Zerto is core to IT Resilience, protecting your business while you transform IT.
  • #14 Zerto slide – who we are   Global Company with many Fortune 500 customers across the globe and across industries (list a few examples)   We have strategic partnerships (hone in on ones that may be key to the account you are talking to)
  • #15 Delivering IT resilience is based on three key pillars: Continuous Availability - Protect against any disruption – Whether planned or unplanned to deliver an always-on customer experience. Workload Mobility – from be migrations to consolidations – you have the confidence to move application and data workloads with ease, without risk and be 100% protected along the way. Multi-Cloud Agility – Leveraging cloud to accelerate your business, and truly take advantage of what cloud offers, ensuring you have the freedom to choose your cloud and be able to move to, from or between clouds
  • #16 What’s under the hood? [This slide gets read from the bottom up] IT Resilience is based on a foundation of Continuous Data Protection – it’s at the core of enabling resilience. Best of Breed replication with the tightest RTOs and RPOs so you have the confidence that when something happens, you can quickly recover or you can make proactive changes and just rewind if you don’t want to commit to the changes and this is built for enterprise scale. Business oriented application recovery. Not just data, this is about your key business services. The Platform also addresses your needs for long-term retention of data and applications. You might be using multiple tools to address data protection needs. Zerto combines those into one platform. Orchestration and Automation is built in - You can’t modernize and innovate if it’s not automated and not simple. With Zerto you can do so faster and with minimal touch, so you can shift your personnel to focus on innovation and implementing services that help the business run more efficiently. Non-disruptive everything – like testing and compliance – is also a critical component. The platform goes “Beyond DR” and so you can use the technology to speed up business. <Example of test / dev is good here>. Minimize risk and gain resilience. Finally –Analytics to see and know it’s all working. Across all infrastructures, to give you the visibility and confidence that you can deliver on your SLAs and meet any audit / compliance needs. <Give an example or use this…Like one of our customers says “I check the Zerto status with my morning coffee – when I see all green, I know the day is going to go ok”>. It’s all in ONE simple, easy to implement, easy to use software-only platform, the IT Resilience Platform. DETAILED VERSION (for those who have the time or interest in going piece by piece.) How do we do it? What’s “Under the hood”? [This slide gets read from the bottom up] First – we are a platform built on any infrastructure – so you are free to use any infrastructure with Zerto. Second – We started with the best replication engine in the market today, VM level replication with the lowest RTO / RTOs in the business. VM-level replication has two critical features: CDP – journal – this is like a TIVO for your TV – allows you to recover at any point in time [insert ransomware example if you like] This enables recovery from short term logical failures and long-term recovery needs Long-term retention We have built one tool for all recovery needs – allows you to test recovery of applications Important for you to mobilize and check it works and is protected This retention can and is happening in the public cloud – portability is key, so you can recover those copies anywhere Those features of VM-level replication, function in three critical ways to make Zerto the simplest platform in the market today: We operate at the Workload level with Application consistency groupings Virtual Protection Groups mean we have full consistency between applications SLAs for different workloads help manage your business needs We enable Testing with no impact on Production environment Spin a full copy of workload and test if it’s working, test patching, dev on it with NO production disruption We make sure impact on your Network is minimal Included are Networking support, bandwidth acceleration… There are two pillars that bookend the platform, without which you could not have simplicity and visibility Orchestration is automated. Nothing manual: This enables you to manage lots of workloads at scale This also means that you can recover from any point in time, as an APPLICATION It’s repetitive and predictable every time you clock button, the same thing will happen APIs for integrating your tools on top of the platform Analytics to see and know it’s all working. Across all infrastructures. Like one of our customers says “I check the Zerto status with my morning coffee – when I see all green, I know the day is going to go ok”
  • #17 So you see, Zerto is one SIMPLE platform for all of your IT Resilience needs Delivering Continuous availability for an always on customer experience Workload Mobility to easily move application and workloads without risk while being protected Multi-cloud Agility to move to, from or between clouds, allowing to control your cloud and control your costs. Zerto is helping customers address multiple use cases – providing the resiliency to move from a reactive to a proactive mode of operation, With Zerto you can have the confidence to Protect, Transform and Innovate IT and the business services you provide to drive business value)
