This document discusses how a media production adheres to and challenges established theories of media. It analyzes the production's use of Goodwin's theory of linking music and visuals through techniques like showing a character playing guitar during a solo. It also discusses application of Todorov's narrative theory through plot points like a character helping another overcome sadness. While many conventions are followed, some are challenged, like not showing what initially caused the character's sadness. Comparisons are made to the music video for "Wake Me Up When September Ends" and how both productions similarly apply and adapt media theories.

This document describes a digipack cover with 4 panels: a front cover, inside cover 1, and back cover. The front cover would display the album title and artist. The inside panels may include song information or credits. The back cover could feature additional artwork or legal information.
The magazine advert and digipack are effective ancillary texts that complement the music video through recurring motifs. The flower motif appears in both the music video and magazine advert to symbolize the characters' love, and it could become a recognizable motif for the band. Similarly, the digipack utilizes a cartoon aesthetic like the music video and magazine, and emphasizes the flower motif. It also features visual links to the sun and clouds that represent the characters' emotions in the music video. These recurring motifs and visual links between the ancillary texts and music video help promote a cohesive brand identity and provide context about the themes of love and relationships in the music.
This document discusses conventions and stereotypes related to gender, age, and race that are commonly portrayed in music videos. Males are often shown as dominant and unemotional, while females are depicted as sexual objects who play passive roles. Teenagers are usually portrayed negatively as rebellious or part of gangs, while the elderly are seen as grumpy burdens. Racial minorities, particularly black people, are stereotyped in videos as violent criminals living in dangerous communities.
The document discusses the design process for a flower plant character that appears in a music video. Several early designs are attempted but fail for various reasons, such as giving the flower creepy or unsettling facial features. The final successful design features rounded eyes with a white highlight, dimples, and an open mouth with tongue to make the flower appear cute and happy. This design fits the intended representation of the couple's love and relationship.
The music video was animated so the creators had no control over traditional lighting but chose to set all scenes during the daytime to reflect the positive mood and themes from the male character's perspective of cheering up the upset female character, avoiding any nighttime or darkened shots. Some lighting effects were incorporated, including zooming into an extreme closeup of the sun with a lens flare to transition to a new scene and adding a lens flare in the last scene as the sun descends to shine on a seed, brightening the scene to make it seem like the sun is shining.
Technology is crucial for media production, editing, and consumption. For their music video animation project, the group used Microsoft Paint to create images, Photoshop to add effects, and Premiere to edit the footage into a timeline synced to music. While technology sped up production and editing, older computers hindered progress. Consumption of media has also changed drastically with services like iTunes and YouTube, as well as piracy, allowing easy access without physical media or radio. Feedback is now gained through social networking on the internet.
The document describes the different shot types used in 5 scenes of a music video. Scene 1 uses an establishing shot to set the mood and location. Scene 2 uses mid shots and close ups to show the characters interacting inside the house, and an extreme long shot as they exit. Scene 3 uses an extreme long shot of a hill with close ups of the characters helping each other. Scene 4 again uses an extreme long shot with a close up of one character's face. Scene 5 primarily uses a wide shot with one cut to a worm's eye view of a seed being planted.
The group split up the animation workload for their music video into thirds. Wesley was responsible for the opening and initial character shots, as well as connecting footage. Jonjo worked on the hill scene and connecting footage. The author handled the opening credits and final scene, as well as connecting footage. They began production in October 2011 and worked through revisions until completing additional connecting scenes by February 2012. Some of Wesley's footage required redoing in editing, which Jonjo took responsibility for in late February to early March.
Vladimir Propp studied Russian fairytales and identified that there are typically 8 main character types that appear: the dispatcher, the helper, the princess/prize, the villain, the father, the donor, the false hero, and the hero. When applying Propp's theory to a short video with only two characters, some of these roles can still map to the characters but not all are needed - the male character takes on the role of the hero who tries to help the female character overcome her depression represented as the villain.
The document provides lists of options for various elements of planning a film or video project, including types of lighting, camera shots, locations, animation styles, characters, and potential songs. It includes both technical and creative categories to consider when pre-production planning.
The document outlines a 12 week plan for creating an animated music video. In the first few weeks the group selected a song, developed characters and story, and chose stop motion animation using paper. They later switched to using whiteboards and then Photoshop/Microsoft Paint for easier production. Over weeks 7-10 each group member animated different scenes. In weeks 11-12 they edited the clips together, syncing to music, and resolved issues with inconsistent file sizes.
Oasis is a British rock band formed in 1991 in Manchester, consisting originally of 4 members including brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher. Noel joined as the band's songwriter and helped release their successful debut album "Definitely Maybe" in 1994. Over the next few years they had commercial success with albums like "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" but the band was also known for controversies stemming from Liam's substance abuse and fights between the brothers, which eventually led to Noel quitting in 2009. They drew influence from bands like The Beatles, The Stone Roses, and The Rolling Stones.
Mise en scene refers to everything presented in a scene that appears in front of the camera, including location, costumes, props, and color. The document provides details on the mise en scene for a music video, including using a house to show a relationship and hill to represent lyrics, not using costumes for stick figure characters, including a guitar as a prop to connect to song lyrics, and using bright colors for happy scenes and cool colors for sad scenes to quickly portray character moods.
Microsoft Paint is a basic graphics program that comes pre-installed with Windows operating systems. It has changed little since its introduction, with each new version primarily introducing small tweaks rather than major changes. The document discusses the evolution of Paint across different Windows versions, noting updated features in versions like Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, Vista, and 7. It concludes that Paint's simplicity makes it suitable for creating frames for a music video despite its limited capabilities.

This document discusses conventions and stereotypes related to gender, age, and race that are commonly portrayed in music videos. Males are often shown as dominant and unemotional, while females are depicted as sexual objects who dress revealingly. Teenagers are usually portrayed negatively as thugs or rebels, while old people are seen as grumpy and burdensome. Racial minorities, particularly black people, are stereotyped in videos as violent criminals engaged in gangs and drug culture.
The music video was animated, so the creators had no control over traditional lighting but chose to set all scenes during the daytime to reflect the positive mood. While the female character was upset, the story was told from the happy male character's perspective as he tries to cheer her up. Some lighting effects were incorporated, including zooming into the sun for a scene transition and adding a lens flare, and using a lens flare in the last scene when the sun shines on a seed the male character planted.
The document discusses several fonts being considered for a CD cover and evaluates their suitability. It finds that one font is inappropriate as it is unclear and creepy. Another font is deemed very good as it has a big blocky style that fits the feelgood pop song and features flowers linking to the music video. The best font is described as visually representing clouds, connecting to the song title and having a warm inviting tone fitting the theme.
Colours in media can represent various themes and emotions. The document discusses the symbolism and meanings associated with different colours that will be used in a stop motion animation music video to help tell the story. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, and white are analyzed for their emotional connotations and which aspects fit best with the themes of male and female characters, one trying to cheer up the other who is depressed. Green, yellow, orange, blue and purple are selected for representing nature, happiness, enthusiasm, calmness and sadness respectively.

1. Movement
As our music video was an animation, we didn’t have actors or bands, so we
couldn’t tell them to act or perform in a specific way. However, we could animate
our characters in our video in a specific way. Due to time and talent restraints, our
characters don’t actually ‘walk’. There while the characters do move, their legs
remain constantly static. This was done to save a huge amount of time. It was also
done as no one in our group had the required amount of talent to perform the
nesessery animations. Instead, our characters ‘slide’ along the ground. While this
gives the entire production an amateur feel, we do certain tricks in order to try and
hide this as best as possible. In the first scene when we see our characters through
their respective windows, we position said window so only the top half of their
body is visible. We also try to have as few scenes as possible with our characters
walking, opting for close ups or mid shots when possible.
