Motor skill development in infants and children occurs in three main stages: 1) Gross motor skills like crawling and walking develop before fine motor skills such as grasping. 2) Motor skills develop from the head downwards in a cephalocaudal pattern and from the center outward in a proximodistal pattern. 3) There are three fundamental sets of motor skills - locomotor, manipulative, and stability skills. The development of motor skills is influenced both by maturation and environmental experiences.
