When Riverhead Building Supply set out to expand its central distribution center and build the second warehouse, the original thought was to copy the design of the first building, a 124,000-square-foot structure with 16 mainframes and 48 interior columns. However, when Radon Construction, the local Butler Builder®, got involved, it became apparent the building design could be more efficient by opting for the Landmark™ 2000 structural system from Butler Manufacturing™.

When NCCM Company needed a new building, they developed a list of requests, including the need to accommodate expansion within five to ten years. The owners, Brent and Julie, toured industrial parks in River Falls, Wisconsin, and noticed a trend: many of the buildings were Butler® buildings. The Niccums decided to hire Derrick Building Solutions, a local Butler Builder®, for the job.
How has housing design changed and improved over the last decade? The AIA Housing and Community Development Network Knowledge Community has been awarding projects that are excellent examples of housing design for over 15 years. This session will present early research of the trends of those projects as an introduction to a discussion with participants regarding what makes good housing design.

Katherine Williams, AIA, NOMA, LEED AP is a licensed architect in Northern Virginia. She has had a varied career path from traditional architecture firms to community development to managing commercial construction projects. She has served as chair of the AIA Housing and Community Development Network KC advisory group, was the NOMA magazine editor for five years, and was an Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellow in San Francisco. Current Experience (projects currently underway or recently completed in 2009)
Partner/Architect/General Contractor. Innovative Retail and Office Complex, Anthem, Arizona: 25,000+ square
foot, stand-alone office and retail development. As a partner with BDS, LP, responsibilities include the design of
the company’s first large-scale mixed development project. Along with the preparation of Construction Documents
for the shell building, Morris Group Architects, LLC will prepare all tenant improvement documents for
approximately 12 separate tenants along with the construction of each tenant improvement. Future
responsibilities will include property management duties.
Owner/General Contractor. 2,500 square foot custom spec. home construction, Mesa Arizona. MGA
Construction, LLC has recently completed the construction of a 2,500 square foot custom residence in Mesa,
Arizona near the foothills of the Superstition Mountains. Construction Costs totaled $500,000. Construction
period was 12 months.
MGA Construction, LLC. Various tenant improvement and custom home construction projects for various clients
completed or underway since February, 2006 including: A 2,000 square foot spec. office suite, a 3,000 square
foot bookstore, several yogurt shops and coffee shops – values ranging from $60,000 to $500,000 and a one-of-a-
kind custom home in the Whisper Rock community in North Scottsdale – compliant with the Scottsdale Green
Building Program.
Morris Group Architects, LLC. Various tenant improvement and stand-alone projects, including those
mentioned above. Most recently completed, or under way, in 2009:
• Shreenathji Temple, 15,000 sf free-standing Hindu Temple and all associated support buildings, including

2. • Custom home design and construction for a private Residence in Whisper Rock Estates, North
Scottsdale. This 3,500 s.f home completed the review process in the City of Scottsdale the first time
through, without comment and in the Green Building Program. MGA Construction, LLC has completed
this project in November, 13 months after the start date. This home was constructed at $1.2 million.
• Generations Lifestyles Assisted Living, a 36,000 sf senior assisted living facility in Quartzsite, AZ. The 62
room facility is designed in accordance with HUD Standards (this is a HUD funded project. This client
has several other prospect facilities in the funding stages.
• Morris Group Architects is currently assisting the Town of Wellton, AZ with consolidation of the Water
Services control and testing facilities. The 1st phase of work includes facility design documents for a new
Control Building. This package will be submitted to the State for funding approval, at which time the 2nd
phase, Construction Documents, will be prepared.
• A 6,500 sf custom home designed for Sun Valley Buildings in Superstition Springs country club.
Currently under construction and estimated at $2 million.
• Several facility renovation projects for The Boeing Company including a complete remodel of the
executive corporate offices, replacement of out-dated paint booths with new state-of-the-art paint rooms
for their Apache Helicopters, and numerous safety retrofits throughout the facility.
• Several facility renovations for ATK Ammunition Systems Group including a materials storage facility, gun
bay structural retrofit (gun mount structural design), and a large industrial paint booth installation.
Morris Group Architects, LLC provides architectural and engineering services on an on-going basis (some under
blanket contracts) for several well known, national and international industrial clients including:
• The Boeing Corporation (Apache Helicopter Manufacturing facility) – on going facility modifications and

Electronics Industry
Project Architect. Seagate Technologies, Milpitas, CA: 15,000 square foot Class100 cleanroom expansion,
existing cleanroom remodel, and existing office space remodel. Responsibilities included assisting client in
determining solutions for facility upgrades, code analysis studies, managing design staff, producing construction
documents and providing construction administration services.
Project Architect. VSK Photonics, Irvine, CA: design of 5,000 square foot Class 100 cleanroom and support
buildings. Responsibilities included managing design staff, developing and producing construction documents, and
project review. In addition to the above responsibilities, extensive hazardous production material (HPM) analysis
and reporting was performed to conform to the strict requirements of Orange County, CA, the reviewing agency.
Project Architect. Agility Communications, Santa Barbara, CA: small project remodels to an existing photronics
facility. Responsibilities included assisting client in determining solutions for facility upgrades, code analysis
studies, producing construction documents and providing construction administration services. Space planning,
building code and HPM analysis performed for future building purchase
Project Architect. IBM, Almaden Research Center, San Jose, CA: Ongoing small project remodels to existing
facility. Responsibilities included assisting client in determining solutions for facility upgrades, code analysis
studies, managing design staff, producing construction documents and providing construction administration
services.
Project Architect. Intel, Chandler, Arizona: design services for the remodel of 18,000 square feet of a national
distribution center and warehouse. Responsibilities included assisting client in determining solutions for facility
upgrades, code analysis studies, managing design staff, producing construction documents.
Project Architect / Project Manager. The Boeing Co., Mesa, Arizona: Mr. Morris was the Client Service Manager
for Southwest Boeing Facilities Operations responsible for assisting client with organizing facility upgrades for
Boeing’s clients. In addition, responsibilities included ongoing small project remodels to an existing facility that
provides research and development for national and international defense systems. Responsibilities included
assisting clients in determining solutions for facility upgrades, code analysis studies, managing design staff,
producing construction documents and providing construction administration services.
Project Architect/Project Manager. Microchip Technology, Inc., Chandler, Arizona: small project remodels to
existing facility. Responsibilities included assisting client in determining solutions for facility upgrades, code

Project Architect. Intel, Qiryat Gat, Israel: design of 40,000 square foot Class 1 cleanroom with H6/H7 occupancy

4. Project Architect. SGS Thomson Microelectronics, Phoenix, Arizona: participated in many small projects.
Responsibilities included assisting client in determining solutions for facility upgrades, code analysis studies,
producing construction documents and providing construction administration services.
Project Architect. Intel, Chandler, Arizona: design and construction services for the conversion of 20,000 square
feet of B2 occupancy to hazardous occupancy for support of Class 1 and Class 100 cleanroom space. Project
Architect. Intel, Chandler, Arizona: design and construction services for the buildout of 100,000 square feet of
Class 1 cleanroom.
Project Architect. Intel, Chandler, Arizona: master planning, design and construction services for a 1.3 million
square foot microelectronics manufacturing facility with Class 1 cleanrooms.
Senior Review. Amkor Technologies, Inc., Laguna, Philippines: provided technical review of architectural
construction documents for the remodel of 40,000 square foot Class 10,000 and Class 100,000 cleanroom at the
P3 facility.

Architect of Record. Procter & Gamble Manufacturing Co., Phoenix, Arizona: responsible for the review and
approval of interior projects as a part of the City of Phoenix permitting and inspection process under the Annual
Facilities Permit program.
Lead Architect. Ross Products, A Division of Abbott Laboratories, Casa Grande Arizona: Lead Architect for a
major $30 million remodel of an exiting food manufacturing facility to add a new production line. Facility
improvements included code compliance analysis, design of USDA compliant areas for processing, filling,
sterilizing and packaging of medical, pediatric and adult nutritional products, as well as administrative office space.
Other Industry Experience
Project Architect. United States Bureau of Reclamation, Glendale, Arizona: 28,000 square foot, 2-story
professional office building for the local USBR operations.
Project Architect. SmithGroup, Inc.: Raytheon Defense Systems, Tucson, Arizona: fast-track design and
construction administration for the consolidation and remodeling of the U.S. Defense weapons manufacturing
facility. Responsibilities included assisting client in determining solutions for facility upgrades, code analysis
studies, producing construction documents and providing construction administration services.
Project Architect. SmithGroup, Inc.: Detroit Lions Stadium, Detroit, Michigan: package owner responsible for the
design detailing of the two main entrances, which were six-story curtain wall systems.
Project Lead. Goldstein Roumbos Petrick and Associates, Tucson, Arizona: served as project lead for various
commercial, industrial and residential projects. Responsibilities included design and construction document
preparation, review of projects for code compliance, development and administration of contracts and
