This document provides guidelines and best practices for content displayed on monitors throughout an organization. It addresses font sizes, animations, layout, slide timing and call to actions. Technical specifications for different monitor configurations are outlined, along with sample layouts that have been tested. Data on viewer distances and considerations for different facility locations is also presented.
Cloud Computing: What it Means/Does/Costs and Why You Should CareDW Nelson
At the 2008 DETC conference, David Nelson told us "Computers, as we know them, will disappear". By now, everyone has read the headlines and heard the exhortations about how Cloud Computing (running our applications and storing our data on the web) will transform our lives.
But just what are these applications that will lead us into this exciting new paradigm? This session will spotlight a number of the hottest web-based applications, including a description and example of "The Virtual Office, for Virtually Nothing". Come learn how to separate fact from fiction, and determine for yourself if the promise of cloud computing is finally coming true!
With rapid development of india’s national economy and improvement of living standards, energy issues have turned into serious social problems, restricting further development in the country. Large public buildings in india consume a great quantity of energy, and the indian government has rolled out a number of programs to retrofit them. Many retrofit technologies are readily available in india. However, there is uncertainty about technology effectiveness and which technologies work better in which climate zone. Only spotty analyses and summaries of real projects are available in literature. This report compares and analyzes these technologies in detail and provides some guidance in selecting economically effective approaches to retrofitting large public buildings. The first section sorts out some common building energysaving technologies and describes each technology with real projects. This section offers related background information for calculations later in the report.the second section summarizes energy consumption in office buildings and retail stores based on a literature survey for three major locations in india. The data includes itemized energy consumption, as well as energy use at whole-building levels. Later, building energy consumption simulation software – equest is used to simulate typical public buildings we constructed out of the literature survey. We calibrated the models, adjusted the usage schedules, and built a series of prototype models for all three geographical locations. The last section evaluates the effectiveness of each retrofit technology. Equest simulated the energy consumption with and without retrofit technologies in order to determine savings. We then added a cost analysis and calculated the typical payback period for each technology. Finally, we summarized these findings in tables so that readers can easily compare and understand how much savings and the payback period they can expect before starting a retrofit project.

In this session, we will understand how we can integrate Angular Material with Angular Projects. After that, we will look into how we can use those Material components in our project. And finally, we will understand how can we create custom themes with Angular Material in our Angular project.
Alex Pazhyn, who has more than 7 years of experience with UI design, wtells about «Designing in the Material Design Style».
1. What the Material Design is?
2. Work with color palette, typography and custom branding
3. Guidelines and slicing
4. Frameworks for MD Style
5. Solving the issues and Best cases.
Presentation will be interesting for UX/UI designers and Android developers.

2. 2 August 2016
My role
Brand guidelines
• Ensure use of Avnet color palette,
fonts
• Promote use of Avnet images
• Creation of special monitor ppt
templates
• Ensure flat design
• Professional, consistent
appearance including proper
alignment and font sizes
Best practices
• When no Brand image is available,
consult on image ownership /
copyrights
• Provide guidance regarding slide
timing, animations & transitions,
concise content, call to action, etc.
• Work with known owners on
employee concerns
Technical consultation
• Work with monitor owners to ensure their content is visible (word count, font
size, image choices and size, etc.)
• Develop new layouts for the businesses specific to their needs
• Work within constraints of systems running slideshows including dameware,
media players, etc.
• Help businesses understand design principles for viewer optimized content
4. 4 August 2016
Best practices
Recommendations
Font and size:
Arial or Clan*
Titles
• Standard = 32 pt.; Minimum size = 28 pt.
Body text
• Standard = 18-20 pt.; Minimum size = 16 pt.
Animations & transitions:
• Animations: Only use if necessary to tell story, then use sparingly
• Employees sitting near a monitor find animations distracting
• Monitor owners won’t use slides that contain animations or they delete the
animation in order to use the slide, causes extra work for everyone involved
*Note: To obtain the Clan fonts,
you must purchase a
license and it is not readily
available. If Clan is utilized
in layout, then slide or text
must be converted to
image and inserted
5. 5 August 2016
Best practices
Layout:
• Target word count (per slide): 55 without cover slide
• Use fewest number of slides possible to communicate message
• Colored transparent bar should overlay and line up with bottom of image
• Transparency set at: 30% and main colors of brand only
• Bar height: 0.68” (standard size); 0.50” (wide)
Flat Design considerations (see brand guidelines):
• No drop shadows or 3D effects, limited transparencies (colored boxes &
transparent bar)
Iconography:
• Maximum amount of icons per slide: three within the transparent bar
accompanied with icon name
• Icon size: no larger than 0.30” x 0.30”
• Font size maximum for “icon name”: 12 pt. (standard size); 10.5 pt (wide)
7. 7 August 2016
Configurations for monitors
All monitors render content slightly different; most noticeable artifact is
alignment and size
• To prevent extra black space on the sides and/or content clipping on a given
monitor, two PowerPoint templates have been created, modified and tested for
use exclusively with facility monitors
• Systems utilize DameWare or other remote connection software
• Can have “zones” configured by GIS / AV Contractor and additional
equipment is required to configure additional zones
• 47th Street has three zones: EM area 1st floor; Materials Dept. on 1st
floor; 2nd floor breakroom
• EM area and 2nd floor breakroom are maintained by Kris; Materials
is maintained by Kimberly O’Neil; Hilton building: one zone
maintained by Becky Morones
• The other locations use the same base deck as created by Kris for
the EM area and they add their own slides to rotation
8. 8 August 2016
Configurations for monitors
• Additional locations in 47th Street utilize media players and are updated using a
USB stick
• These configurations are stand alone and require individual widescreen
special MP4 videos
• Operated independently and updated via USB
• Three of these systems:
• Lobby (external communications only) – tv is currently broken
• HR tv (left by café) HR & AYS content only
• Comms tv (right by café) everything else considered internal
content, but not including HR or AYS
• These systems are updated manually and are maintained by
Kris
10. 10 August 2016
Technical specifications
Formatting:
• Slides are available in “standard” 4:3 ratio and widescreen formats (9” x 5.5”)
• Standard slides typically run as PowerPoint slide shows
• Widescreen slides typically run as specially encoded MP4s
• Viewers are often in motion and may only catch a glimpse of the content
Call to action:
• Viewers don’t typically carry pen and paper with them, so the call to action must
be memorable
• Utilize short urls
16. 16 August 2016
Tested and proven data
Target viewing distance = 30 ft.
Viewers are often walking
Consideration for call to action: Use
easy to remember avnet.me link so the
person walking by does not forget where
to look the content up when they get back
to desk
Key finding: Almost all employees who work in warehouse and integration
locations do not have company email address. The monitors are very important
in these facilities, since they are one of the main sources for content
