The Monarch butterfly lays eggs on milkweed plants. The caterpillar that hatches eats milkweed leaves voraciously, molting and growing larger until it forms a chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar transforms into an adult Monarch butterfly that emerges, dries its wings, and then flies off to feed on flower nectar.
