Optimising Your Front End Workflow With Symfony, Twig, Bower and GulpMatthew Davis
We take great care in our back end coding workflow, optimising, automating and abstracting as much as is possible. So why don't we do that with our front end code?
We'll take a look at some tools to help us take our front end workflow to the next level, and hopefully optimise our load times in the process!
We'll be looking at using Twig templates and optimising them for the different areas of your application, integrating Bower and Gulp for managing assets and processing our front-end code to avoid repetitive tasks - looking at how that impacts the typical Symfony workflow.
These are the slides from my "HTML5 Real-TIme and Connectivity" presentation at the San Francisco HTML5 User Group (http://sfhtml5.org). The presentation covers:
Web Origin
Cross Document Messaging (PostMessage)
CORS
XHR Level2
WebSocket
Server-Sent Events (EventSource)

Cool like a Frontend Developer: Grunt, RequireJS, Bower and other ToolsRyan Weaver
Bower, Grunt, and RequireJS are just a few tools that have been re-shaping the frontend development world, replacing cluttered script tags and server-side build solutions with a sophisticated, but sometimes complex approach to dependency management and module loading. In this talk, we'll put on our trendy frontend developer hat and find out how these tools work and how they differ from what we might be used to. Most important, we'll see how using tools like this might look in Symfony2 and how our application can be a friendly place for a frontend guy/gal.

FITC - Here Be Dragons: Advanced JavaScript DebuggingRami Sayar
Have you ever cried yourself to sleep unable to find the cause of a horrendous bug in your node app? Cry no more, your tears will be reshaped into blinding swords as we explore uncharted territories laced with mystical creatures.
JavaScript debugging is an often avoided topic due to the uncertainty of how best to accomplish it and the lack of powerful introspective tools. This talk will explore new territory and showcase tools that help you debug complex and difficult issues in your node or frontend app. Libraries and tools such as node-debugger, Visual Studio Code, vorlon.js, and memory leak catchers will be used to slay dragons.
No more shall you fear building complex apps with JavaScript!
Imagine for a while that Rails wouldn't exist. How would we write a MVC app from scratch?
Rack provides a minimal interface for developing web applications in Ruby. In fact it's the solid foundation of all major Ruby powered web frameworks.
During this talk we will dive deep into Rack. We will see the smallest possible Rack Application and learn how it works, by studying Rack internals. We will grow the Application step by step till we implement it in simple MVC style.

Stop Making The Web Harder Than It Is; Real-world REST, HATEOAS, and Hypermed...kiphampton
Developing for the Web shouldn't be hard. Yet, many smart developers make it more difficult than it needs to be by choosing tools and frameworks that do not fully take advantage of all that HTTP has to offer. This talk demonstrates how projects at all levels-- from the simplest brochureware site to the most advanced Hypermedia APIs--can be made simpler by getting back to the basics of HTTP. We introduce Tamarou's internal application development and publishing framework, Magpie (scheduled for public release to coincide with YAPC::NA) and step through a series of real-world examples to show how its resource-oriented approach to development keeps simple things simple and makes hard things easier.
Topics include:
* Why MVC is the wrong way to think about Web development.
* Why most frameworks that claim to be RESTful aren't (and how that makes life harder)
* An brief introduction to Resource-oriented development.
* A series of production-tested Magpie recipes covering the gamut of Web-dev from simple templated sites through advanced Hypermedia applications.

The Internet has changed everything in so many industries. And at the same time, in marketing, some fundamental truths never change.
- Americans are now spending more time online than watching TV, much of that on social media sites that did not exist 10 years ago.
- Newspaper advertising revenue has dropped by over 50%.
- About $50 billion/year is now spent on online advertising
70% of Americans use mobile as part of their retail experience
- P&G is now spending over a third of its marketing budget on digital.
Marketers need to explore the buyer’s journey, develop personas, and use the right mix of digital and traditional media to respond to where that customer is – from awareness to customer to advocate. This presentation addresses some of the disruption caused by digital and the new opportunities that it produces, and technologies to enable them.
This presentation was developed by Louis Gudema, Senior Digital Marketing and Sales Maven, and was given at NEDMA's 2014 DM Innovations Symposium.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

•
On mediatypes, describes an
anti-pattern implemented in
Ruby on Rails (RoR)
This pattern has unfortunately
made it to Mojolicious
and that is to have the mediatype communicated on the URL
8. •
The recommended practice is to use Accept
headers to communicate media-types
•
and these can be weighted 8-o
•
We use HTTP status codes to communicate state
and status
•
URLs should be used to communicate intent not
formatting
•
For Mojolicious this required some experimenting
10. $self->respond_to(
json => { status => $status, json => $response },
text => { status => $status, text => $message },
xml => {
status => $status,
text
=> XMLout(
$response,
NoAttr
=> TRUE,
RootName => XML_ROOT,
keyattr => [],
XMLDecl => XML_DECL
)
},
any => {
status => HTTP_UNSUPPORTED_MEDIA_TYPE,
json
=> status_message(HTTP_UNSUPPORTED_MEDIA_TYPE)
},
);
11. Lessons Learned
•
Mojolicious does the right thing when it comes to the
Accept header and actually does it quite well
•
The anti-pattern supported by Mojolicious can be
avoided
•
Use # instead of : in your routes (see the diff) and it will
work
•
But actually ?format=(json|text|xml) is supported but we
only use it for debugging (and it actually has
precedence (and it is undocumented on our side))
