It discusses common challenges women entrepreneurs face in growing their businesses, such as lack of business goals, knowledge of financing options, assets, skills and confidence. It explores how lack of networks and challenges accessing new markets can also hinder business growth. The module aims to help credit unions better support women entrepreneurs in overcoming these barriers.

Based on research conducted with 26 entrepreneurs and 19 stakeholders in the Netherlands, I wrote this Creative Brief, designed to brief an agency on creating a "one source solution" to support Dutch startups.
In 2016 we created the Fellowship For Female Founders, a 6 month+ program to support women from the New England area looking for their 1st outside capital to get the support they deserve.
This fellowship helps them Own Their Story, Own Their Numbers and Own Their Network so they can confidently OWN THEIR RAISE.

The presentation is used for an introductory class at the university level. Most countries – not just South Africa – are rapidly adopting freelance or independent contractor model. In a sense we’re reverting back to pre-industrial cottage industry, but in a hyperconnected global village in which freelancers can – and do - work for anyone.

• Women entrepreneurs are not a homogeneous group.
• Not all women face barriers to growing their businesses
but many do. The Women’s Enterprise Centre identified
common challenges including
– business education and training levels
– self-perceptions and confidence
– access to networks
– household income and assets
– family situation
– geography

same challenges more intensely and other

• 69% of women surveyed by Women’s Enterprise Centre
(2011) were motivated to start their business for reasons
relating to “passion and self-fulfillment.”
• This influences how and when entrepreneurs prioritize
business planning including setting goals and revenue
targets.
• This lack of early planning results in an ‘I can do it all’
approach rather anticipating what will be needed –
financing, people, technology – to grow the business.

equity capital because they don’t understand the
options, terms or jargon (Anne Day, Canadian

• Access to types of equity capital usually occurs
through informal networks made up primarily of
men. Women often do not have the personal
relationships that provide the necessary access.
