 The following slides list the core and optional modules at Level 2 - which will
vary according to programme - so please use the Module Choice Form you were
provided with.
 All modules are worth 20 credits. You must ensure that you sign up for 120
credits in line with your Programme Regulations. Cores will automatically
appear. You should ensure that the credits are equally weighted - 60
credits per semester. DUAL students must take 60 credits with each
Department. – and ensure credits are equally weighted – 60 credits per
semester. Each department provides information on their modules.
 Module choices will be approved or rejected within 48 hours of submitting
them. Regularly check your online registration.
 Cores on one programme can also be taken as optional modules on another
programme - with the exception of: SCS2019 Advancing with Digital Methods; SCS2000 DoingQuantitative
Sociological Research; & SCS2020 Doing Qualitative Sociological Research; – which are closed (restricted or have pre-
requisites).

 Using a sociological and anthropological
perspective this module seeks to
problematise the concept of ‘family’ as a
natural and universal phenomenon. It
underscores the need to explore the
notion of the family as a social and
historical construction and will achieve
that by examining the diversity of family
life in countries around the world.

 This module will review the historical
development of a range of theoretical
approaches to the study of crime and
deviancy, consider how sociologists have
studied the primary institutions of social
control such as the police, courts and
prisons, and consider the contribution of
the sociology of crime and deviance to
issues of contemporary significance.

Module descriptors
 This unit examines the variety of responses to
crime that encompass the use of both crime policy
and social policy.Crime policy responses
encompass the use of the role of the police, courts
and prisons.Alongside this is the social policy
approach which includes health, housing,
education, employment, youth and family as a
means of crime reduction. Theories of crime and
the role of criminologists in policy making; and the
criminalisation of social policy as an unintended
outcome, are considered.

 The unit provides a 'sociological perspective' on
contemporary social and economic
transformations in the UK and globally, with
emphasis on the challenges posed for social policy
theory and practice, as well as the potential to
imagine alternative social policy scenarios. Issues
considered include: globalisation, neoliberalism,
falling fertility and ageing societies, precarious
labour markets and migration and mobility.

 These (closed/restricted) modules provide
an introduction to some of the most
widely used quantitative and qualitative
methods in social research. The primary
aim of the modules is to develop a
working knowledge of research issues to
enable students to read and comprehend
both quantitative and qualitative research
articles.
 Core and restricted to: SCSU01, SCSU02,
SCSU07, SCSU08. These modules are closed and
NOT available as options apart from to SMI or to
SCSU10.

 The module examines how ideas about
race help to shape and determine social
and political relations and considers the
part played by ideas about race in forming
notions of self and other at the micro and
macro levels. It also explores the role of
race as a major source of social divisions
and aims to show the significance of
racism to the reproduction of structural
inequalities.

 The module explores the different approaches to
understanding work and labour in sociology. The
course will cover the classical approaches of Marx,
Weber and Durkheim to more contemporary
theories (including debates aroundTaylorism,
Fordism, flexibility, skills, control in the workplace,
trade unionism and labour process theory). The
influence of class, race, age and gender in the
world of work will be dealt with along with
emerging issues relating to globalisation and new
technology.

 This team taught unit adopts a `sociological
approach to social policy‘. It explores key concepts

used to look at the role of digital media
(from email to social media) in protest and
activism from the 1990s onwards. The
module will specifically focus on
contemporary cases of protest and
activism. It will develop an empirical
explorative analysis of the use and role of

  • 3.  The following slides list the core and optional modules at Level 2 - which will vary according to programme - so please use the Module Choice Form you were provided with.  All modules are worth 20 credits. You must ensure that you sign up for 120 credits in line with your Programme Regulations. Cores will automatically appear. You should ensure that the credits are equally weighted - 60 credits per semester. DUAL students must take 60 credits with each Department. – and ensure credits are equally weighted – 60 credits per semester. Each department provides information on their modules.  Module choices will be approved or rejected within 48 hours of submitting them. Regularly check your online registration.  Cores on one programme can also be taken as optional modules on another programme - with the exception of: SCS2019 Advancing with Digital Methods; SCS2000 DoingQuantitative Sociological Research; & SCS2020 Doing Qualitative Sociological Research; – which are closed (restricted or have pre- requisites).

  • 7. Module descriptors  Using a sociological and anthropological perspective this module seeks to problematise the concept of ‘family’ as a natural and universal phenomenon. It underscores the need to explore the notion of the family as a social and historical construction and will achieve that by examining the diversity of family life in countries around the world. It incorporates classical and contemporary theorists, grounding their analyses in a range of empirical areas of investigation. It explores key debates about media ownership, media effects and representation. Module descriptors  This module will review the historical development of a range of theoretical approaches to the study of crime and deviancy, consider how sociologists have studied the primary institutions of social control such as the police, courts and prisons, and consider the contribution of the sociology of crime and deviance to issues of contemporary significance. Module descriptors  This unit examines the variety of responses to crime that encompass the use of both crime policy and social policy.Crime policy responses encompass the use of the role of the police, courts and prisons.Alongside this is the social policy approach which includes health, housing, education, employment, youth and family as a means of crime reduction. Theories of crime and the role of criminologists in policy making; and the criminalisation of social policy as an unintended outcome, are considered. Module descriptors  The unit provides a 'sociological perspective' on contemporary social and economic transformations in the UK and globally, with emphasis on the challenges posed for social policy theory and practice, as well as the potential to imagine alternative social policy scenarios. Issues considered include: globalisation, neoliberalism, falling fertility and ageing societies, precarious labour markets and migration and mobility.   • 12. Module descriptors  These (closed/restricted) modules provide an introduction to some of the most widely used quantitative and qualitative methods in social research. The primary aim of the modules is to develop a working knowledge of research issues to enable students to read and comprehend both quantitative and qualitative research articles.  Core and restricted to: SCSU01, SCSU02, SCSU07, SCSU08. Module descriptors  The module examines how ideas about race help to shape and determine social and political relations and considers the part played by ideas about race in forming notions of self and other at the micro and macro levels. It also explores the role of race as a major source of social divisions and aims to show the significance of racism to the reproduction of structural inequalities. The course will cover the classical approaches of Marx, Weber and Durkheim to more contemporary theories (including debates aroundTaylorism, Fordism, flexibility, skills, control in the workplace, trade unionism and labour process theory). The influence of class, race, age and gender in the world of work will be dealt with along with emerging issues relating to globalisation and new technology.
