I guess I was so busy being in love that I didn’t see some of the little incidents that were happening. I guess maybe if I would have opened my eyes, what happened the other night wouldn’t have happened. I just don’t now. I just don’t understand it all. Mike had come over at about four in the afternoon, and we were going out to dinner and then to a game. I was excited. I had never been to a basketball game. Mike was going to explain everything that happened for me, so that I would understand what was going on. We were supposed to go with a couple of his friends. I had a patient, and I didn’t get home until close to 4:30. Mike was pacing up and down the floor when I walked in. I apologized for being late and told him that I was sorry but I could not leave this patient. We had had little incidents before, but this was the first time I really began to be fearful. Mike’s face started to get red, and I looked in his eyes and I became frightened. His eyes just looked like they belonged to someone else. His whole body began to change. It became more rigid, and he started to yell at me. At first, his abusiveness was really only putting me down for only caring about my patients and not caring about him. When I protested and tried to calm him down, he only seemed to get angrier. Before I knew it, he was shaking me and slapping me, as well as screaming at me. Even though misappropriation of assets fraud schemes are much more common, financial statement
fraud causes huge losses for the victims: investors, employees, and even the financial markets. It is
crucial for fraud examiners and forensic accountants to understand the reasons that financial
statement fraud is committed. Additionally, this type of fraud is not easily observed, so auditors must

I Believe in Writing
Let me tell you why I started writing in diaries. I was 17 years old when my mother got cancer. My mother tried to take her own life by jumping out of a hospital window. Thank God it was time for her meds and the nurse was able to get her back to her bed. This was so devastating to me, just the thought that she wanted to die sooner. I did not understand why she did not want to spend what little life she had to be with her children. I started writing daily about her day and what I was feeling. I had just gotten out of a children’s home. Definitely there was so much fear in me that I was going right back to the home. Many tears flowed from my eyes that year. I did not want to see my mother leave this world without getting any time with her. After all I was in the children’s home since I was eight and a half years old. My junior year in high school my teacher took me aside as she knew what I was going thru. She told me to write my life down that I had a story to tell. I did not write my life down however; I did start a diary and wrote in it from the day my English teacher told me to start. My mother died and I made it thru the funeral but it was pure and raw emotions I felt watching my sisters scream and brothers cry like babies. All I could do was sit and watch, I never shed a tear because I had come to terms with her dying by writing about her.
Fast forward 5 years down the road after my mother’s death. My brother Randy took his young life at 37 by taping his car windows and running an exhaust pipe thru his window. We looked for him for days. We never had one clue that he was suicidal. If we did we never picked up on it. We found him in the morgue. My brothers and sisters and I all knew that Randy never got over our mothers death, after all he was a momma’s boy. It took me a long time to get over his death than it did my mothers. He came to me in a dream and explained why he took or life. It gave me a sense of peace and understanding inside as to why he took his life. Maybe it was just that I made myself believe why.To this day two of my sisters have yet to get over his death. I tell them all the time to sit and write their feelings down. They may understand more why he did this horrible thing that crushed all our lives. Again writing got me through this horrible tragedy.
Now I will tell you about my daughter April who tried to take her life many years ago when she was 20 years old. Thank God, she had the sense to go to the hospital afterwards before the pills kicked in she was able to tell them what she did. Took me a long while to understand how a love gone wrong can cause a girl to want to die. I asked my daughter to please write me a letter explaining how she felt and why she felt she wanted to leave life as she knows it. She gave me a 5 page letter that stated this boy was the love of .

Toulmin Analysis of the “Road Trip” Cartoon
Identifies claim and support.
The reader has to infer the claim of this cartoon since it is not directly stated. The claim is that screens have replaced face-to-face conversation as the primary way people now interact with each other. The support is provided by the driver of the car, who notes how much lonelier car trips have become, and the other passengers, all of whom are focused on their smartphones and tablets.
Analyzes warrant.
The implied warrant is that screen-based technology makes us more isolated and disconnected from each other.
Identifies backing.
The backing is also implied and reinforced by the picture. It suggests that road trips are valuable opportunities for connection and conversation that many families are giving up. It also reinforces the common belief that interacting with screens is more appealing than interacting directly with people face-to-face.
Infers rebuttal.
No direct rebuttal or qualifier appears in this cartoon. I think, however, that this cartoon could be considered as a rebuttal to those who think that screen-based communication is always superior to face-to-face communication. As a rebuttal, this cartoon highlights the negative consequences of embracing screen-based communication.

In Unit 3, we will be focusing on change and reform brought about as a result of the rapid social and economic changes of industrialization and urbanization. While the U.S. looked great from an outside perspective, with its rich flaunting their wealth and industry booming, it was riddled with exploitation of the people and political corruption, thus earning the name the Gilded Age. This brought in a sense of moral obligation and led to a reform movement that swept across the nation, with organization developing locally and nationally. This period of reform is known as the Progressive Era.
It was a time to expose the underlining errors of the U.S. society and to make changes for the good of the people. The Progressive Era would address a variety of issues, including factory and living conditions, agriculture reform, child labor, women’s rights, political reform, conservation, and other social concerns. While not perfect in its initial steps of change, this period will pave the way for continued social justice in our nation’s history.
Objectives:
Discuss the impact of political corruption on the U.S. government and evaluate the effectiveness of political reform.
Identify the leading reformers of the Progressive Era and evaluate the effectiveness of the reform movements.
Describe the problems facing farmers in the late 19th century and evaluate the effectiveness of the reform movement by the Populists and other farmers’ organizations and alliances.
Compare the Progressivism domestic and foreign policies of Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and William Howard Taft.
Unit 4 Imperialism and WWI
In Unit 4, we will focus on the role of the United States in World affairs. In the late 19th century, the United States not only sought to redefine itself as American, but also to establish its place in the global political arena. Foreign policies paralleled those of many European nations, with a focus on imperialism and preserving foreign interests and markets, specifically in the Western hemisphere. It will be the United States positioning in the Spanish-American war that marks the beginning of its imperial power, with future expansions and political involvement in Latin America and the Pacific Ocean.
At the turn of the century, the United States will feel the long-term effect of its imperialistic decisions. Being recognized as a World leader, involvement in international affairs now spanned beyond the Western Hemispher.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

I hadn’t been with a man for so many years, I had forgotten what it was like, how much fun it was to be in love, how happy it was to have someone make you smile, and someone you could smile with. I guess I was so busy being in love that I didn’t see some of the little incidents that were happening. I guess maybe if I would have opened my eyes, what happened the other night wouldn’t have happened. I just don’t now. I just don’t understand it all. Mike had come over at about four in the afternoon, and we were going out to dinner and then to a game. I was excited. I had never been to a basketball game. Mike was going to explain everything that happened for me, so that I would understand what was going on. We were supposed to go with a couple of his friends. I had a patient, and I didn’t get home until close to 4:30. Mike was pacing up and down the floor when I walked in. I apologized for being late and told him that I was sorry but I could not leave this patient. We had
- 4. had little incidents before, but this was the first time I really began to be fearful. Mike’s face started to get red, and I looked in his eyes and I became frightened. His eyes just looked like they belonged to someone else. His whole body began to change. It became more rigid, and he started to yell at me. At first, his abusiveness was really only putting me down for only caring about my patients and not caring about him. When I protested and tried to calm him down, he only seemed to get angrier. Before I knew it, he was shaking me and slapping me, as well as screaming at me. I screamed back at him to stop, but he wouldn’t listen. In fact, he reminded me of patients I have had who have gone into psychomotor seizures. At that point, I started pushing away from him and attempted to flee, but he caught me and started swinging me around in the kitchen. All of a sudden, he took me and flung me across the room, and I felt myself crashing into the stove. That was the last thing I knew. I feel on the floor, and I could feel somebody stomping and kicking me as I lay there. I sort of felt like I was drifting in and out of consciousness. “I don’t know how long I lay there on the floor, but when I woke up, Mike was gone. The house was dark.
- 5. The pain was so bad I could barely move. I knew that I had to have been seriously injured. From the pain, I thought maybe I had some internal bruises. Thank God there’s a phone in the kitchen. I crawled and barely made it to the phone. I pulled on the cord so that I could knock it down to the floor, because I could not stand. I called my partner and just told him that I was physically injured. I didn’t tell him what happened to me but just told him to send an ambulance. The next thing I knew, I was there in this hospital bed. I don’t know what happened. I don’t know how I got here. All I know is what they had told me the next morning. “Apparently, when Mike pushed me into the stove and maybe when he was stomping on me with his feet, my kidneys were damaged. As soon as they got me to the hospital, they could barely find my pulse, and they knew there was internal bleeding. They rushed me into the emergency surgery and had to remove one kidney. My second kidney was badly damaged, but they think they can save it. I don’t know what happened. I don’t know how it got so bad. It just seems like it’s all one great big nightmare. I just don’t know what I’ll
