Editor's Notes

  • #11 This was the first innovation. God did something that had never been done before. For six days, God continued to innovate: create birds, fish, night, day, oceans, lakes, land, etc. culminating in God’s greatest innovation: man. When God created woman, God innovated again forming her not from the dust of the ground but from the rib of Adam. Humankind was in a perfect environment. Life was simple and really boiled down to two tasks: (1) Enjoy unhindered fellowship with God; (2) Be fruitful and multiply.
  • #12 The fall changed Everything because knowledge of good and evil was presented along with an expansion of humankind’s duties. We now had to work to get things done (ground was uncooperative; child birth was labored; kids acted up; etc.) and innovation on our part came into play because we had new knowledge (good and evil).
  • #13 Alexander the Great conquered a great deal of the known world and then united that world in the Greek language. Roman Empire then rose after Alexander the Great and made travel over great distances possible with roads which helped to spread the gospel in the first century.
  • #14 God has used technology to innovate down through the years. The printing press was created to help spread the gospel through the distribution of God’s Word.
  • #17 People expect to have access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week Technology at times is the gateway that draws young adults to ministry Technology gives today’s ministry a greater geographical reach than ever before Technology gives today’s ministry instant access to people where ever they are
  • #18 Impact: smaller churches sometimes see themselves as the Hebrews did in Number 14 when contemplating going into Canaan, as “grasshoppers”. Technology can make the smaller church have just as big of an impact on the world as a megachurch. Learning: Recorded seminars and video on demand making learning available 24x7 and for experts from around the world to be available in one’s own home (Ill: iTunes University, edX university courses) Legacy: Through the proper use of technology, events can be recorded and made available for future generations establishing history that others can experience.
  • #20 How many of us remember what this device is? We’ve come a long way since the mimeograph and stencils punched out on a typewriter. A good copier is a critical part of today’s front office.
  • #21 Also can print from your PC to the copier
  • #22 Lease: our first copier lease was 5 years which is an eternity in terms of technology Copies: this can be critical depending on the size of your church. Also, paper size effects copy count. Can you track who is generating copies by means of logging in to the device. Maintenance/Supplies: does your lease include replenishing toner or do you have to get that on your own? Who pays when the copier breaks down and how often and when can you call for maintenance? Support local or foreign (overseas). Ill: help in setting up my copier on our church network over the phone. Volume: Can this copier handle the amount of volume that you need to generate on a weekly basis. Finishing: Staples, collation Computer / Copier connection: can you control the copier from your network connection computer and send documents to the copier? Refurbished: some vendors will give you a discount if you lease a previously used copier. Do your homework but some deals are to be had.
  • #23 A computer is an essential part of doing ministry in our current culture. It covers such a wide variety of functions: communication (email, PhoneTree, etc.), accounting, document creation/word processing (newsletters, bulletins, flyers, banners, etc).
  • #24 Not going to weigh in on what to get as both have their merits. Personally I have been more of a Windows desktop and laptop person but since the advent of the iPhone and iPad, I have seriously considered getting an Apple laptop the next time I am in the market. Why? Apps and the cost of software on the Apple platform makes doing so much for so little possible (most apps are less than $10 while MS Office still goes for about $100).
  • #25 For the church office I would recommend a desktop unit. For the pastor (especially the bi-vocational pastor) I would recommend a laptop.
  • #26 CPU is one of those factors that is hard to reverse later. Once you buy a particular model, you are pretty much married to it because usually to change will require a complete change to the motherboard inside the computer which is no small change. When looking at the speed of processors available, try not purchase or consider purchasing a processor that has just been released. The price of the processor will be at a premium price and if you give that processor 2-4 months it will drop in price dramatically.
  • #27 If you can add additional drives internal to your system that is a good feature but if not, you can always add additional external hard drives to your system via a USB port.
  • #28 The more memory you have the better especially in today’s memory hungry app world. More RAM will allow your applications to run smoother and definitely is a requirement if you are going to be streaming or doing video editing.
  • #29 DVDs: Burn disks to store important documents and keep in fireproof safe UPS: Critical to protect your investment from power surges/spikes. Get one that has a battery back-up to allow you to gracefully shutdown your computer
  • #32 Good place to pick one of these up cheap is ebay.com or amazon.com
  • #33 Benefits: shoots pics under a variety of different conditions; good battery life; shots HD video (20 min intervals)
  • #34 Want to make sure that you get a camcorder that preferably has a USB connector. Other considerations including making sure that you have a memory card that has a large enough capacity for an hour or two to record an entire service. Also you might want to make sure that you have an extra battery in case you are not near a power source and have to run for a while on battery.
  • #35 Want to make sure that the memory is pretty generous. I get 45 hours on my digital recorder. Want to make sure that there is a built in USB jack so you can plug the recorder directly into your PC/laptop for easy transfer. Most come in stereo variety.
  • #37 Free development software from Microsoft & Oracle.
  • #38 Church Art Pro: $12/monthly, $130/monthly
  • #41 Domain name should pass the radio test: can it be stated once and stick like a radio commercial?
  • #43 Browers: IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari Standards: if website uses flash or tools that require a user to download something before they can use the site, they might be turned off and not be willing to wait.
  • #44 Free: Rarely are you going to get the flexibility you want from a free website. Plus there is some control you will give up with a free site (limited amount of storage space, annoying ads, limited amount of transfer bandwidth)
  • #47 Hostgator is a great provider for DIY web hosting. When I say DIY, I mean you have to upload all the components of the website to the your hosting account; establish all of your email accounts; and manage upgrades to your website’s components. You can run a variety of Content Management Systems using this type of web hosting include Drupal, Joomla and Wordpress.
  • #51 Free development software from Microsoft & Oracle.
