What is an Emergency?
At mid night when the doctor is at deep sleep . . .
Telephone rings . . . ✆ ☎
When attended, the husky nurse voice tells “Doctor there is
an Emergency for bed number . . . .
Emergency is a sudden unforeseen crisis (usually involving
danger / pain / bleeding or life threatening) that requires
immediate action.
Emergency Medicine is the branch of medicine concerned
with the prompt diagnosis and treatment of injuries or
trauma or sudden illness.
5.
Does Ayurveda have any emergencies?
Yes ! Any medical Practice do have the emergency conditions.
It is believed that emergency treatment in Ayurved is not
present and in emergency one need to take only allopathic
medicines, and Ayurveda has limited role to play in chronic
ailments only.
This belief in society and Ayurveda physicians has arrested
development of Ayurveda, and limiting its role as adjuvant
therapy.
Ayurveda to become main line of medicine needs to have
emergency management.
The emergency management was described in Ayurveda,
which needs only enlightenment.
6.
Does Ayurveda have any emergencies?
Ayurveda enlist the disease crisis states as “Upadrava”
Acharya Charaka, opines ‘Upadrava’ (complication) says’
complication is more troublesome than the main disease
itself because it appears in the later stages of disease,
when the body is already weakened by the previous disease.
Acharya Charaka has a clear concept of curable or
incurable diseases.
‘Ashukaari’
It is important to note that mild to moderate emergency
can very well be managed according to Ayurved.
7.
The duty of an Ayurveda physician !
In emergencies Ayurveda deals with the subject of
emergencies in detail. The physician should be well -
conversant with the present condition and also for the
prognosis; he should explain everything to the satisfaction of
the patient and his relatives and start treatment with
courage and confidence.
In surgical and gynecological emergencies, if the physician is
trained handle the patient, he can do so; but if is not trained
to surgical and gynecological operations; it is the duty of the
physician to diagnose the disease, refer to the proper
surgeon or gynecologist. But he should give preliminary
treatment so that the condition may not be deteriorated and
the patient may feel relief.
8.
The duty of an Ayurveda physician !
Some more emergencies may be added with these types of
emergencies and that may lead to medico-legal
complication burns, poisoning etc. unless authorized, a
general practitioner is advised not to treat such cases
because that may lead to medico-legal complications.
There are some of the conditiones like Sarpa Dansha,
Vrischika Dansha, etc. are require prompt and careful
treatment.
9.
How treatable disease become crisis?
Acharya Charaka has long ago stated that the lack of
equipment and attendants, patients incapability, lack in
physicians skills, non availability of management and
delayed treatment schedules makes the curable disease as
incurable and crisis establishes. (Charaka Nidana 2/22-23)
Classification of emergencies in Ayurveda!
Ayurveda emergencies are classified as:
Disease bad prognostic symptoms causing inconveniencies
(status asthmatics)
Sudden bleeding conditions developed (trauma)
Physiological disturbances (frostbite / sunstroke)
Drug reactions (allergy)
Procedural malpractices (Panchakarma etc.)

Burn management through Ayurveda!
Mild burns typically take around a week or two to completely heal
and usually don’t cause scarring. The goal of burn treatment is to
reduce pain, prevent infections, and heal the skin faster.
Cool (not cold) water over the burn area for about 20 minutes.
A cool compress or clean wet cloth placed over the burn area helps
relieve pain and swelling. Can apply the compress in 5- to 15-minute
intervals.
Jantughna ointments, Oil and creams help prevent infections. Apply
Jatyadi Oil, Dashang lep or Tankan Bhasm to burn and cover with
sterile cloth.
Aloe vera is often touted as the “burn plant.” Studies show evidence
that aloe vera is effective in healing first- to second-degree burns.
Aloe is anti-inflammatory, promotes circulation, and inhibits the
growth of bacteria.
67.
Burn management through Ayurveda!
Honey just got sweeter. Apart from its delicious taste, honey may
help heal a minor burn when applied topically. Honey is an anti-
inflammatory and naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.
Avoid exposing the burn to direct sunlight. The burned skin will be
very sensitive to the sun. Keep it covered with clothing.
Sheet veerya Aushadh yog, Vatasamak Yog are effective in pain.
Gandak Rasayan, Ras Manikya, Vishmushtika Vati,
Prataplankeshwar Ras etc. drugs are effective for healing.
Vranvata Chikitsa
77.
As per Ayurveda, the kidneys are the part of Medoveh Srotas. The
kidneys are made of the "Rakta" (Blood) and "Meda" (fats or
Adipose tissue) dhatus; among the seven Dhatus which are
explained in Ayurveda. Treating these two dhatus is also an
effective way to treat the kidneys.
In Ayurveda Urine is known as “Mootra” which is explained as
Mala (excretory product) of the body. So almost all kidney related
disorders occurs due to the disbalance or vitiation of the three
Doshas (i.e. - Vata, Pitta and Kapha) if an obstruction or blockage
is occurring in Medoveh Srotas, it may lead to damaging of kidney,
ureter, etc.
The damage to the tissues is contributed by the disbalance in the
three doshas. Mainly the Vitiated Vata dosha and the Kapha
dosha are responsible for the blockage of various channels of the
Medoveh srotasa and lead to impaired functioning of the kidneys.
Renal Failure
78.
Co-relation of Renal failure and Prameh: In renal failure
treatment, always remember that treatment of obstruction in
Medovehsrotas is important. As you can see that our ancient
Acharyas have explained that due to the obstruction of
Medoveh Srotas person can be affected with pre-symptoms
of Prameh, so we can easily understand that Prameh and
kidneys disease are connected with each other.
Co-relation of Renal failure and High blood pressure: The
kidneys filter our blood. The two kidneys filter about 120 to
150 (946 ml) quarts of blood to produce about 1 to 2 quarts
of urine, composed of wastes and extra fluid. The urine flows
from the kidneys to the bladder through tubes called ureters.
The bladder stores urine. When the bladder empties, urine
flows out of the body through a tube called the urethra,
located at the bottom of the bladder. In men, the urethra is
long, while in women it is short.
Renal Failure
79.
Co-relation of Renal failure and High blood pressure:
Kidneys work at the microscopic level. The kidney is not one large
filter. Each kidney is made up of about a million filtering units
called nephrons. Each nephron filters a small amount of blood.
The nephron includes a filter, called the glomerulus, and a tubule.
The nephrons work through a two-step process. The glomerulus
lets fluid and waste products pass through it; however, it prevents
blood cells and large molecules, mostly proteins, from passing.
The filtered fluid then passes through the tubule, which sends
needed minerals back to the bloodstream and removes wastes.
The final product becomes urine.
High blood pressure can damage blood vessels in the kidneys,
reducing their ability to work properly. When the force of blood
flow is high, blood vessels stretch, so blood flows more easily.
Eventually, this stretching scars and weakens blood vessels
throughout the body, including those in the kidneys.
Renal Failure
80.
Co-relation of Renal failure and High blood pressure:
If the kidney blood vessels are damaged, they may stop
removing wastes and extra fluid from the body. Extra fluid
in the blood vessels may then raise blood pressure even
more, creating a dangerous cycle.
So always remember these two factors along with
Medoveh obstruction before treating the patient of renal
failure.
Renal Failure

Chikitsa Sutra:
Sansodhan Chikitsa: Mradu Swedan, Mradu Snehan,
Niruhvasti.
Sansaman Chikitsa: Vatanuloman, Rasayan, Balya, Shaumya
mootral, Pachan, Hrid
AushadhYog:
Always use Saumya yog in renal failure patients, as these are
easily digestible for patient. Avoid using Ugra Ras Yogas in
this condition.
Ekal Ausadh: Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa), Varun
(Crataeva nurvala), Rakt Chandan (Pterocarpus santalinus),
Sariva (Anantmool/ Hemidesmus indicus), Gokshur (Tribulus
terrestris), Palash (Butea monosperma), Shatavri (Asparagus
racemosus)
Renal Failure
82.
Adarsh Aushadh Chikitsa Patra (Swanbhoot):
1. Punarnavadi or Punarnavamool Churna 500 mg
Mandoor Bhasm 65mg
Praval Pishti 65 mg
Muktashukti Bhasm 125 mg
Anantmool Churna or Raktachandan churna 250 mg

2. Makoy Ark 20 ml twice in a day
3. Sarvato bhadra vati - 1 tablet at night with ½ cup cow milk
Renal Failure
83.
4. If patient still has low Hemoglobin (Hb) level which does
not increase with above treatment, you can add:
Punarnava Mandoor or Dhatri Lauh
5. If patient has Prameh / Madhumeh, you can add:
Yasad Bhasm, Swarn Makshik Bhasm, Vasant kusumakar
Ras
6. If patient is having Daurbalya (weakness) in excess:
Sarvatobhadra Vati, Shatavri Churna, Vasant kusumakar Ras,
Swarn Basant Malti Ras
7. If patient is suffering from repeated fever: ………
Renal Failure
84.
8. If patient suffers from urine retention:
Can prescribe Mootralyog like: Hajralyahood Bhasm, Swet
Parvati, Gokshuradi Guggul, Chandra Prabha Vati, Punarnava
Ashtak Kwath, Trin Panchmool Kwath, Varun Churn etc.
Panchakarma / Sodhan Chikitsa:
Mradu Swedan (Sudation Therapy): In Ayurveda Mootra is
explained as one of the Mala among the Three Mala (i.e.
Mootra, Pureesh, Sweda), so if there is disturbance in the
working of kidneys when waste material through urine not
expels out properly, then through mradu swedan the dosh
which moves towards shakha, comes back in its own place
Kostha (Kostha is the main seat of dosha) and also all pores
of skin is open, through it load of Kidney is slightly reduce.
(Always remember the swedan should be very mradu in
nature because the renal patients are having very Alpa Bala.)
Renal Failure
85.
Panchakarma / Sodhan Chikitsa:
Basti: In this disease patients commonly face the problem of
Kosthbadhta (constipation), in which case we can administer
Niruh / Kashayvasti of Erand Tail, Go-mutra and Varun Kwath
/Ark, or we can give Amaltas Kwath Kashay Vasti in this
condition. This Basti is also helpful for samany mradu
sodhan because Amaltas has Tridoshaghn, Rasayan and
Mradu Rechak qualities.
Abhyanga/Bahay Snehan: If patient is having Rukshta
(dryness) and Kandu (itching) in the body you can go for
vatashamak oil like: Mahanarayan oil for reducing dryness
and coconut oil for reducing itching. Vatashamak oil can be
applied before Swedan procedure. The Abhyanga should be
done by applying very light force.
Other Procedure: Also adopt AvgahSwed, PaadSwed as per
requirement.
Renal Failure
86.
Pathya-Apathya
(Diet and Lifestyle changes in Kidney failure):
In kidney failure, must monitor the amount of fluid and
certain nutrients that the patient takes each day. Also
monitor the patient’s urine output.
In Kidney failure, the diet should be proper and should be
dependent upon the treatment plan. Most people who suffer
from renal failure need to limit:
Fluid
Potassium
Phosphorus
Sodium
Renal Failure
87.
Fluid
Too much fluid intake can cause swelling, high blood pressure,
heart problem and trouble breathing. Patient should also need to
cut back on some foods that contain a lot of water. Soups and
foods that melt, such as ice or ice cream have a lot of water in
them. Many fruits and vegetables are also high in water content.
Potassium
In renal failure, the kidneys cannot easily remove potassium from
the blood. So, don’t take foods high in potassium, it may need to
be consumed in limited quantities.
Potassium rich foods: Beans, bananas, yogurt or curd, cantaloupe
or muskmelon, potatoes, sweet potatoes, spinach, apricots, fish,
mushroom, Kiwi fruit, pomegranates, grapes, orange, litchi, mango,
guava, etc.
Renal Failure
88.
Phosphorus
Phosphorus is a mineral found in many foods. It is associated with
calcium and vitamin D metabolism to keep bones healthy. During
renal failure phosphorus can build in patient’s blood. Too much
phosphorus is called hyperphosphatemia. It can lead to bone
disease, which causes weak bones / osteoporosis that break easily
or fracture.
Phosphorus rich food: Eggs, meat, fish, milk, cheese, lentils, beans,
chocolates, carbonated drinks, etc.
Sodium
Sodium helps to keep the right amount of fluid in blood. When
kidneys are not working, sodium can build up in the blood. When
this happens, the body holds on to too much water. This can make
blood pressure too high.
Use these tips to limit sodium in your diet:
Do not add salt in food when cooking or at the table, try to use rock
salt (Sendhanamak) in very less quantity.
