During an induction activity, students were asked to evaluate and assign marks to 6 cakes made by tutors to secretly demonstrate different levels of quality, presentation, originality, and collusion. Students worked in groups to determine criteria, weightings, and scores for each cake. This allowed discussion of feedback, assessment, plagiarism, and what constitutes success or failure. Most students found the activity useful for understanding the assessment process. It also fostered relationships between students and tutors and could be referred back to later. Some limitations included not all students liking cake and not all being able to connect the analogy to future assessments.
