1. A Carnot heat engine operates between a source at 1000 K and a sink at 300 K. If the engine is supplied with a heat at a rate of 800 
kJ/min, determine the thermal efficiency and the power output of the engine. 
2. Derive an expression for the work done and heat t ransfer during a polyt ropic process. 
3. What is thermodynamic process? In an isothermal process 8 m3 of air at a pressure of 2 bar is compressed to a 
pressure of 10 bar. Calculate the amount of work done on air. 
4. A gas expands in a cylinder according to the relation pV1.3 = constant from an initial state of 0.3 m3 and 1000 kPa to 
a final state of 101 kPa. Calculate the work done on the piston by the gas pressure. 
5. Air at 20 kPa and 20 C is expanded isothermally to 15 kPa. Calculate the change in internal energy and work done. If it is expanded 
adiabat ically, find the corresponding values. (MGU-May-2013) 
6. State the Kelvin Plank's statement and Clausius statement of second law of thermodynamics and prove its equivalence. (MGU-May -

Module-III - PART C (5  12 marks) 
1. A horizontal shaft running at 200 rpm.is to drive a parallel shaft at 300 rpm. The pulley on the driving shaft is 60 cm diameter. If the 
belt is 6 cm, thick, find the diameter of driven pulley: Neglecting belt thickness , Taking belt thickness into account , Assuming in the 
lat ter case a slip of 4%. 
2. A leather belt 10mm thick transmits 40kW from a pulley 120cm in dia. running at 240rpm. The angle of lap is 160. The coefficient of 
frict ion is 0.28. What width of the belt will be required if the st ress in the belt is limited to 2MPa? 
3. Discuss the merits and demerits of belt , rope and chain drives for t ransmission of power. 
4. Sketch a spur gear and mark the salient circles. 
5. Derive a relat ion between the tension in the belt on the tight and slack sides and show that it is independent of the size of the pulley.
