Modals are helping verbs that express the manner or mode of the main verb such as ability, possibility, permission, obligation, etc. The most commonly used modals in English are shall, should, will, would, can, could, may, might, must, ought to, used to, need and dare. Modals are used to ask permission, make requests, express possibilities, give advice, express necessity, prohibition, promises, intentions, and wishes. A modal does not change based on number or person. It is always used with the main verb in its basic form. Modals can be used alone in response to questions and when joined with "not" they can be contracted.
