South East Europe features a great renewable energy potential. The Region has a good solar, wind and geothermal energy prospects. According to experts if the hydropower is utilized only, the countries can meet 100% of their energy needs. Well-developed agriculture and forestry industry is a prerequisite for the increasing of bioenergy implementation. From 5-th to 7-th of March 2014 the South-East European Exhibition & Conference Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy and Smart Cities will open its doors. Philip Lowe, DG Energy EC, estimated the event as a key European energy hub and an exchange platform for new ideas.

In deze LEDtalk vertelt oprichter Chintah Shah van TVlight over de sensor die straatlantaarnpalen hun licht laat aanpassen aan weggebruikers (intelligent lichting the past & future). Door ze zachter te laten branden, kan het energieverbruik fors omlaag. Shah kwam op het idee toen hij boven Nederland vloog en zag hoeveel licht de lantaarnpalen afgaven. Op de TU in Delft werd in korte tijd het eerste prototype in elkaar gezet. Het koste veel tijd om tot de optimale oplossing te komen. Echter waar veel andere sensorbedrijven dit idee ook hadden, maar faalden in de techniek, slaagde hij. Hoe het technische precies werkt blijft geheim, maar zijn oplossing wordt inmiddels wereldwijd toegepast. Inmiddels wordt via data van de sensoren en slimme software, na gedacht Smart City concepten.

Presentation given on the EU VERYSchool project at the SmarTABCD’15, Workshop on Smart Technologies and Applications on Buildings, Cities and Districts. The workshop was organized in parallel to the 1th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations (AIAI 15) organized in Bayonne from the 14th to the 17th of September, and focused on results generated by recent European initiatives for the development of innovative smart technologies for buildings and districts efficiency. Building energy consumption is strongly dependent on the functionality of the building, the occupancy behavior, the outdoor environment, the structure and building materials, and the operation management. Nowadays and to optimize energy consumption, buildings are using automation systems with equipment, metering systems, smart devices and IoT (Internet of Things) applications to optimize their usage. Today’s automation systems produce tremendous amounts of data. This data can be very hard to organize and use across different applications because it is stored in many different formats; has inconsistent naming conventions and very limited data descriptors. In essence it lacks information to describe the meaning of the data. And without meaning a time–consuming manual effort is required before value creation can begin.

It took place between 29th and 30th November, in Paris, at Porte de Versailles Exhibition Centre. ICTFOOTPRINT.eu organised a 30 minutes speaking session about “ICTFOOTPRINT.eu: a web platform to help organisations in measuring and reducing their ICT carbon footprint” on Wednesday 30th November at 12:10. The presentation focused on how ICTFOOTPRINT.eu can help organisations in reducing their carbon footprint, with a special focus on standards which allow assessing carbon and environmental footprint of ICT goods, services and organisations. The presentation will mention as well the benefits that come from such assessments.

This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
