Mobile telecom companies are working on the next generation of wireless technology, called 5G, which will offer connection speeds up to 10 gigabits per second and latency below 1 millisecond. 5G will require huge investments and its implementation faces challenges from disagreements over standards and spectrum use. It also faces competition from increasingly common indoor WiFi networks.
