Cisco vs. Microsoft - Strategic Decisions for a Unified Communications Deploy...Brent Kelly
Many organizations have Cisco networking equipment as well as Cisco voice communications solutions. These same organizations also have Microsoft desktop software and MIcrosoft Lync, which is used by many enterprises for presence and instant messaging.
Both vendors are pushing very hard to have organizations adopt their entire unified communications offering. For Cisco, this means deploying the Jabber client along with WebEx for conferencing and Cisco video solutions. For Microsoft, this means deploying more capabilities in Microsoft Lync, including conferencing and collaboration as well as Enterprise Voice.
In many companies, there are articulate and impassioned people who are sincerely trying to do their best who argue for one vendor's unified communications offering over the other. This often ends up in a "Cisco versus Microsoft" discussion, which may become a heated argument.
What to do?
This presentation looks at many of the issues involved with a Cisco vs. Microsoft unified communications debate. It provides individuals and companies with strategies for eliminating one vendor as well as ways the two solutions may co-exist in the organization.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
HCL Notes and Domino License Cost Reduction in the World of DLAUpanagenda
Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/hcl-notes-and-domino-license-cost-reduction-in-the-world-of-dlau/
The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!
We’ll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. We’ll provide examples and solutions for those as well. And naturally we’ll explain the new licensing model.
Join HCL Ambassador Marc Thomas in this webinar with a special guest appearance from Franz Walder. It will give you the tools and know-how to stay on top of what is going on with Domino licensing. You will be able lower your cost through an optimized configuration and keep it low going forward.
These topics will be covered
- Reducing license cost by finding and fixing misconfigurations and superfluous accounts
- How do CCB and CCX licenses really work?
- Understanding the DLAU tool and how to best utilize it
- Tips for common problem areas, like team mailboxes, functional/test users, etc
- Practical examples and best practices to implement right away

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

5. FEATURED CASE STUDIES
Client helps homeowners with services to choose between moving or remodeling their house. Client is based
out of CA.
Sigma Infosolutions was approached to build an iPhone and Android application for Client’s existing website.
The API's were developed and provided by the client and we built the mobile apps that helps end-users to
select remodeling ideas for their house e.g. select predefined interior designs including kitchens, bedrooms
etc. and store the same as their idea file. The user has an option to pick and choose the color combination,
type of material etc. and send a request for a quote to Client.
Sigma Infosolutions mobile development team built the iPhone and Android applications based on the
mockups provided by the Client. We had built some intelligent algorithms that pulls images using Bing search
and renders the same in the application for the different types of user request. When the user submits a
search request, Bing API's are used to get the results based on several criteria and results are paginated. The
user can also browse through the endless results and can choose whatever that suits and create their own idea
file containing their remodel ideas for each and every room. The application was also integrated with
Facebook and Twitter.
This smart phone app was recognized as one of the best reviewed apps in Dec 2012.
Since this announcement the app received 1000+ downloads a day
Built mobile video sharing application across social media for a company in Noth AmericaBuilt mobile video sharing application across social media for a company in Noth America
Technology Used
Client provides solutions that helps tell stories with your short video clips and allows sharing videos privately
and even broadcast them, Client is based out of CA.
Sigma Infosolutions’mobile development team built a robust back-end solution which could stitch and stream
videos, building the necessary back-end database and also the api server. We were also tasked to build the
associated iPhone application that would let users watch their short video clips in a streamlined fashion.
As a part of the solution we build the complete back-end system that would process the short video clips
captured by the users. The back-end would encode the videos captured and sent from different devices and
OS versions (iPhone 4, 4S, 5 and with OS versions ranging from 5.x to 6.x) to a standard size and with definite
aspect ratio. As and when a video gets submitted from multiple users, a multithreaded task in the back-end
would pick up each and every incoming video, process them and store them in a video streaming server.
We have built apple streaming solution HLS ( HTTP Live Streaming) along with adaptive bit rate
implementation for streaming videos to the mobile devices. Multiple short videos will be encoded in the back-
end to a standard size which gets stitched and the user can see multiple short clips as one single channel. A
user can create any number of channels and mark them as private or public. The user can also share the
channels he has created with a restricted set of groups and also in social networks.
The mobile bandwidth may vary due to different cellular networks & service providers, however this aspect
was completely mitigated by developing the solution in a manner which can intelligently read the bandwidth
at the mobile client-end and pick-up either low or high bit rate streams and render the same in the client
application along with the API server. This intelligent algorithm provides a flexibility to the user to watch
videos irrespective of their mobile internet bandwidth. Sigma Infosolutions also built the web application
where the user can watch all their stitched video channels in a bigger screen.

6. The client is based in North America and produces Electronic Control Devices (ECDs) used worldwide by law
enforcement, military, correctional, professional security, and personal protection markets.
The client wanted to build an application, that will enable its users to restrict phone usage under certain
scenario or create a protection platform and connect with a comprehensive network of utility service
providers, to many more across North America. The Protector platform is a combination of hardware,
software and services designed to generate piece of mind by providing people with a single dashboard to
protect their family, home, and vehicle. The Safe Driver Starter Kit is the first in, what will become a full line
of home and family protection products that will all be managed through a unified Protector Console. This
initial solution enables parents to help their children form safe driving habits, but the platform has been
designed to interface with various products that address numerous different safety concerns. With this
vision, the client approached Sigma Infosolutions to build this from concept to an end product.
Sigma Infosolutions had an existing skill set and processes for the project development. It took three months
for Sigma Infosolutions' dedicated team of five to design, architect, develop, and test the entire application
from scratch.Afew of the salient features of this application are:

The client wanted to build an iPhone application, that will enable its business users to connect with a
comprehensive network of utility service providers ranging from plumbers, carpenters, electricians, to many
more across North America. The iPhone application connects to a back-end web engine to search for service
providers by type of service, time, and location nearest or preferred by the user. It will then notify the short-
listed service providers through e-mails and SMS. The service providers can then choose to get in touch with
the user either through e-mails or SMS.
The application will also allow users to bookmark favorite service providers for future reference and also rate
them on multiple parameters. With this vision, the client approached Sigma Infosolutions to build this from
concept to an end product.
