2. Match on Action
• Match on Action (or cutting on
action) Is a famous editing technique
often used to increase the quality of
continuity in film.
• This technique involves Shooting a
certain action/event, moving the
camera to a new location and
shooting the action again.
• It shows the action but from different
angles to increase the number of
perspectives to give proper
immersion to the piece.
3. Shot/Reverse Shot
• It’s a continuity technique similar to match on action
which switches between two characters during a
conversation.
• Seen regularly in behind the scenes interviews,
Shot/Reverse shot shows reaction and speech by the
interviewee and interviewer.
• It is also used in films, when two characters are
conversing, such as in this scene:
4. 180°Rule
• The 180° Rule is a filming
guideline used to position the
camera for audience’s benefit.
• When filming, the camera man
is not allowed to pass a line
between two characters, as to
keep the positioning of the
characters correct.
• This allows the audience a
greater sense of positioning in
the scene in terms of what is
happening on and off camera.
