global warming and finding alternative forms of
energy.

Prizes, Awards &Funding  EngTech Visionary Winner 2010 – Leanne Normanshire The Awards underpin our Vision, to improve the world through engineering by inspiring, preparing and supporting tomorrow’s engineers to respond to society’s challenges. Professor Roderick A Smith FREng ScD CEng FIMechE IMEchE President  Apprentice of the year Winner 2010 – Tom Goudy Engineering IS the future; without engineering in the future, we would not be able to overcome global warming and finding alternative forms of energy. I felt I would benefit more from doing an apprenticeship rather than continuing with full time education. An apprenticeship is a self developing program not only in education but in life experience. What encouraged youto pursue a career in In order to address this IMechE in the North East are Engineering? Greenpower a national competition to Design, Build and Race an electric car. We are facing a skills shortage in the UK and the North East in particular to fill this gap we must To help pupils and teachers achieve this and inspire encourage young people to consider careers in them to take an interest in engineering we are Engineering. offering design support and encouragement to schools. We are currently working with 4 schools and counting… At the 2012 North East Greenpower Heat 61 teams entered to prove that they had designed the best car! Do you have children of school age? Editor's Notes

  • #3 Current Activities This slide focuses on the acquisition projects. We are undertaking these projects as: - We have an ageing membership – average age is 57 and rising and we need to bring this down for the long term survival of the Institution. - We attained our EngTech license and want to expand this level of membership, taking advantage of the possible 500,000 technicians available in the community. - We wish to ensure all past lapse members have the opportunity to be a member of the Institution and reach their maximum potential. - Offer people in the Armed Forces with an Institution which understands their particular needs. The three pictures are all IMechE members who were awarded Visionary status last year.
  • #7 What have we achieved? – TV and Radio A range of television and radio highlights over the last 12 months – mostly linked to the reports. I have also embedded a Channel 4 news TV clip into the presentation (mute).
  • #8 What have we achieved? – Influencing Government Summary information on our success over the last 12 months.
  • #9 Results On membership, we are the fastest growing Institution in the sector – and accelerating. CEng – we are still increasing our numbers year on year. IEng – small market but we hold our own (4 th in the market). EngTech – In our 1 st year we were 4 th in the market. We plan to be 2 nd in 2009 and 1 st by 2010.
  • #10 Why are we here? – Engineers promoting to the next generation The number one issue for the members in the corporate survey has been engagement with schools and spreading the message of engineering to the next generation. They wish us to provide activities, educational information and support for teachers. They also have a desire for IMechE to intervene at a lower age, even if it is general engineering promotion (not specifically mechanical) Greenpower Greenpower offers students at primary and secondary schools an opportunity to design, build and race an electric car. The event has 22 regional heats with over 400 teams now competing. IMechE provides funding, marketing, advice and helpers for the event. It is also becoming one of the major activities for many of the Regional Committees. Big Bang A joint Institutional project to create the UK ’s largest science, engineering and math fair. Launched in 2008, the event attracted 6500 students as well as a host of companies and personalities. It was Colin who originally came up with the idea before the running was passed to ETB. Formula Student Our flagship event aimed at providing students with practical challenge of designing, building and driving a single seater car. This year we have 105 teams for 20 countries competing at Silverstone. With luck, FS will be the largest event of this type in the world – even surpassing the SAE event in the USA. The event is a key selling point to universities and students, often with oversubscription to FS focussed courses. Publications We produce a number of publications under the new Engeneration brand, helping students and teachers with practical information, advice and facts on engineering. Engeneration also looks after ‘Engineering your Future’ – an event run by the Regions to give students real life engineering examples from participating companies.
  • #12 Why are we here? – Promote professional engineers The final point is informing the engineering community the value of registered engineers and increasing the value of Chartered Engineers etc. I have used some of the Institution ’s key accounts as examples of where we work closely with industry to promote registration.
  • #13 Intellectual Leadership This slide demonstrates the work being undertaken to get our messages out to media and government etc. The reports offer a good medium for the Institution to create its own stories and rely less on reactive press/comment. Upcoming reports: Geo-engineering. A report to outline the value geo-engineering has in helping fight climate change. It is not a solution but could give us some breathing space. This report is also in response to Joan Ruddock MP stating geo-engineering was not even on the Government ’s radar. MAG – Mitigation, Adaptation and Geo-engineering. This report coincides with COP 15 which will replace Kyoto. On this subject, a new Fellow from last year, Alison Cooke , is helping us develop the Institution ’s submission to Copenhagen with other IMechE members. In addition, Alison volunteered to contact other Fellows to find out where, when and how they can help the Institution on a wide range of projects as and when they arise. Engineering Diploma – A report card after two years of the new engineering diploma running in schools. It will focus on the curriculum, teacher assistance and student perceptions of the Diploma. The report will be fashioned like a report card. Future of Flight – To be launched alongside Farnborough and looks at the future developments in the aerospace industry and the possible direction aeroplanes will take in the next 20-30 years. Nuclear – A report on what is needed for the development of a new set of nuclear power stations. Some focus will be on skills as well as the economic benefits this industry has/has not for the UK.
  • #14 Intellectual Leadership Position Statements were created to provide concise information for MPs and Peers. Launched in February this year, the statements cover all four themes and provide readers with the Institution ’s views on a wide range of subjects. We have already created over 24 position statements and will continue over the next few years to add additional papers and update existing statements.
