HoloLens can decrease student science misconceptions before they occur. Giving children the opportunity to explore earth and space science and the human body can motivate, helping educators explain complex topics. Kindergarten student, Kathryn, co-presented and demonstrated HoloLens. Educator Emily Chant demonstrated multimodalities for learning about water molecules. Educators worked in stations constructing models with toothpicks and marshmallows, Paint 3D, and experiencing mixed reality with HoloLens Lifeliqe (Shark, water molecule, and heart), and HoloTour with Rome, and HoloAnatomy.

What does AI mean? What exists and what is hype? Educators won't be replaced by machines, but are crucial in the future of young people. The author of the new ISTE book: "Teaching AI: Exploring New Frontiers for Learning" will answer questions and provide some unexpected twists along the way.
When people still have difficulty in agreeing on a definition for human intelligence, it is reasonable that there is also difficulty in defining what counts as artificial intelligence or what it would mean for a machine to replicate human intelligence. This session helps educators continue to be LEARNERS (1c) by staying current with research that supports student learning outcomes, including from the Learning Sciences. Understanding a Socio-cultural perspective and the importance of how humans learn from and in the presence of other humans is crucial to a discussion on AI, because AI will go as far as the humans who train machines to think. In learning and staying current, this session challenges educators to re-think learning DESIGN (5c) that leverages strengths our human brain has that machines can't do well, and builds in ways for students to leverage what machines can do more efficiently than we can. These help us to create GLOBAL COLLABORATORS where our students use technologies to work with others, including peers, experts or community members, to examine issues and problems from multiple viewpoints.
This one-hour exploratory session will walk though the sections of the book, "Teaching AI: Exploring New Frontiers for Learning" with quick tips and access to free resources supported by AI or helping students prepare for a future with AI ranging from Sesame Workshop to PBS Learning Media with the Crash Course Series for young children though college students, Project-based learning and Design Thinking to Diversity in STEM. It will also include free tools you can use in you classroom right away for creative collaborative projects and assessments. These tools will be used during the City Walk and in the workshop following as my team guides you in ways to bring in socio-cultural perspectives and the importance of humanity while preparing for a future with AI.

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Student Perspective
This presentation was created by Renton Prep Students to share about their heritage and teach others about their family's culture. They audio recorded the presentation as they were presenting to the school, and captured audio in each slide. The end shows how our school continues to celebrate cultures at school, visiting schools, and inviting education leaders from Asia to our school.
FETC 2018: How to Use Design Thinking to Engage Students
This workshop was presented on January 23, 2018 at Future of Education Technology Conference. It started with an investigation of goals for education preparing students for a future where machines may automate about 40% of current jobs. It then talked about the foundational shifts in thinking necessary for Design Thinking and Project Based Learning. The design process and Project Based Learning were discussed in context of early childhood though high school, addressing starting points for conversation with students, families, and co-teachers and administration. The primary design challenge looked at creating a visual representation of a procedure - making toast, demonstrating the wide range of approaches and thought processes. We examined the cross-curricular learning opportunities within PBL, STEM, and fine arts. Potential challenges pertaining to PBL and Design Thinking were also be discussed as well as strategies for successful implementation in the classroom, including cross-age mentoring and supporting research such as Self-Determination Theory, Theory of Mind, child development, anthropology studies of hierarchical behavior (and the positive impact when this model is harnessed for mentoring in a positive way), and neuroscience. Self-Determination Theory is a theory of Motivation that suggests humans have three innate psychological needs, that, when met, increase authentic motivation to persist when things get difficult. The three innate needs are said to be: Relatedness, Autonomy, and Competence. Slides and images are hyperlinked. Click links to access resources. Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental Health
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental Health
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).
