Mission San Miguel Arcangel was founded in 1797 in Southern California between Missions San Luis Obispo and San Antonio. It was the 16th mission established and was originally built in 1795, but a fire destroyed parts of it in 1806. The current church was constructed from 1816 to 1818. The mission contains original paintings by Native Americans and statues of Father Junipero Serra and God. Today it operates as a museum and gift shop after being damaged by an earthquake in 2003.
