On an inadequate foundation of knowledge about the virus, and with high potential for societal mood swings, governments across the world are instructing their citizens to engage in profound and rapid behaviour change (e.g. lockdowns, social distancing, better hygiene) in what can be characterised as a post-truth universe. June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

disruption is accompanied by the unwitting spread
of misinformation and the manipulation of half-

misunderstanding and further
exacerbating otherwise tenuous relations
(Senate S.B.No. 1492 Villanueva, 17).
5. • Cebu City is not also exempted of the misleading information. Thereare
a lot of news that depicts that misleading information affects individual
in identifying facts. One of the example of this is the story of Chona
Mae back on 2012. Cebu was strucked by a 6.9 magnitude
earthquake. th name "Chona Mae" was misheard and was
misinterpreted as tsunami and the result it cause panic and chaos
among cebuanos.

8. In the 20th and 21st centuries, information is the engine of
development. This is fueled by independent news media,
which can serve as a trusted guardian of public interest and an
important part of society’s power checks and balances.
However, recent events have called journalism into question.
Political, technological, economic, and social changes are
irreversibly reshaping the communications landscape, raising
numerous concerns about the quality, impact, and credibility of
journalism. Furthermore, the information ecology is being
contaminated by orchestrated campaigns to disseminate

15. • According Jun Nino Nalipay (2022) a former TV Reporter, TV Patrol
Central Visayas ABS-CBN: Cebu Misleading Informations is evident here
in cebu because I am seeing friends and friends of friends in social
media sharing information that are not verified and are coming from
unreliable sources. It is a problem because the netizens, though not at
all, do not take time to fact check the news or information they are
sharing. They are sharing it without checking the sources.
Unfortunately, because of the posts that become viral, they thought
the posts are accurate when that should not a basis. If people continue
to be irresponsible in sharing information that are not verified, social
media or the society as a whole would become a realm or lies. It's
alarming when people trust what becomes viral than trust the
legitimate media sources, who are in the business of doing their best to
gather the necessary and relevant information"
16. • According to Christian James Nazareth Briones a registered nurse in Cebu City
Medical Nursing (CCMC) College of Nursing: "Misleading information or falls
information is said to be rampant nowadays especially in todays generation
where social media is in vogue. One reason for misleading information comes
from an individual who created or disseminated a false information without
an intention to cause harm. This gives a negative impact especially to
governments. It destroys one's credibility. Inaccurate information creates
comprehension problems; confusion, doubt and reliance. There are facts that
many Americans cannot tell what information is fake and what information is
real. How much more here in our city where we are blind by the truth and
believed with the lies. People have different perspectives. In some cases,
people tend to believe only for what they see not for what they hear from
other people. Misleading information affects negatively in people's perception
in identifying the facts, it will be hard for them to identify which is true.
Individuals who encounter misleading information may actively spread it
further by sharing or otherwise engaging with it"
18. • According a verbatim, a student of HUMSS 12, testify that "Because
people don't care whether the information is reliable or not, misleading
information can impair a person's ability to identify facts by leading
them to believe in certain facts without evidence. AS someone who
deals with this issue on a regular basis, I can attest to this. As a senior
in high school, I've noticed that false information is prevalent in school,
particularly in lower grade levels where identifying facts is not
commonly practiced. Junior high school students are easily swayed by
false information, especially when it is 'spread on the offline or on the
online realm."
