2. Introduction
• In this presentation I will be describing all the Mise-en-Scene elements of our film
opening, ‘The Ruin’s Mist’.

3. Costume
• Rayne's costume is her school uniform. In the first
scene her uniform is correctly worn and she looks
smart however, by the last scene she has taken her tie
off and her uniform becomes casual. This change
signifies her feelings as she moves from place to
place. She starts of getting ready for school and then
at school so, her uniform is properly worn which
shows her discomfort. When she gets to the wood
she is more relaxed. This is shown by her uniform
being ‘scruffy’ (tie off, shirt untucked) .
• The mother is going to wear the typical ‘office wear’.
This is going to be a smart suit like outfit which will
show their social class. We wanted to show that
Rayne is from a middle class background which will
cause the audience to wonder why she is on her own.

4. Lighting
• The lighting at the start of the opening is high key. This is to show how
comfortable she is at home. It then goes to natural lighting as it moves to
the classroom scene and the woods scene. This connotes the way she is not
happy at school and by the time she has finished for the day, her mood has
dropped from the morning.

5. Actors
• The actor who plays Rayne will have to show a range of different facial
expression and body language as they need to reveal to the audience the
changes of her personality and moods.
• The mother’s actor need to have relaxed body language and show thoughtful,
concerned facial expressions. This will make it look more realistic and show
to the audience she is the mother.
• The extras will be used as the classmates who will be seen in the establishing
shot of the classroom. They will be using bold body language to show they
are enjoying themselves. They will also need to be able to ignore Rayne as she
sits at the back of the class by herself.

6. Make-up
• The mother will have heavy make-up which will help show that she is
older and that she is mature.
• Rayne wont wear make-up as we want her to look young and show her
innocence.

7. Props
• We will have a ring which has stone on the top to tie in
with the typical fantasy jewellery. This will be the ‘magic’
ring which will make Rayne disappear. We want to use a
ring with a large stone on to make it stand out as a key
prop in our film opening.
• The drawing need to also stand out as a key prop as it is
Rayne vision of the place she will disappear to. We
wanted to make the drawing apart of the film opening to
cause enigma about where it is and why it is significant to
the story.
• The hairbrush shown at the start of our film opening is a
key prop as it represents a moment of change in Rayne’s
character. While her mother is brushing her hair she is
relaxed and happy. However, when the scene changes to
the classroom Rayne’s personality also changes. She turns
into a quite, lonely person so the hairbrush signifies her
happier personality.

8. Setting
• The first scene is going to be filmed in a bedroom as this is a typical place where children feel
safe. This is portrayed in the first scene where we see a happy, bubbly personality because
Rayne feels secure therefore there is no need for her to hide her true personality.
• The second scene is going to be filmed in school. This is the place Rayne feels most unhappy.
She is seen sat at the back of the classroom on her own, drawing. This is while the classmates
are having fun around her. This is to show her different side as she doesn’t socialise with
anyone else. This helps create enigma for the audience.
• The third scene is filmed in the woods. This is typical for a fantasy film as most have a scene
that is set in the woods. We wanted to do this to follow this convention as it will help the
audience establish the genre. In fantasy films the woods is generally the place where the magic
happens, so we have done the same. The woods is Rayne’s safe haven so we wanted to show
this by using close up shots to show the audience her emotions.
