Mise en scène refers to everything presented within a scene or frame that helps tell the story, including settings, costumes, lighting, actors' positioning and expressions. Color is an important element of mise en scène that can be used to convey mood and symbolism. Dark or sinister colors may imply an evil mood or character, while light, positive colors can give an angelic or hopeful feeling. Costumes also provide cues through their style, materials and how the characters wear them. Formal detective-like outfits may suggest a mysterious or serious personality, while urban street clothes could mean less fortunate status. Lighting too creates atmosphere, with dark shadows implying negativity or danger versus full illumination representing innocence.
