This document discusses high availability, load balancing, and how Apache 2.2 and Tomcat 6.0 work together to provide a highly available and load balanced solution. It provides an overview of horizontal and vertical scaling. It then demonstrates a live example of configuring Apache as a load balancer for two Tomcat instances. The presentation concludes with a live demo of the load balancer manager interface.
The document describes how custom commands are used in a pet clinic recipe to dynamically add and remove tomcat instances behind a load balancer. During installation, addNode and removeNode commands are added to the Apache load balancer. When tomcat starts, it invokes addNode to be registered with the load balancer. On stop, it invokes removeNode to deregister. This allows automatic scaling of tomcat instances behind the load balancer.
The document discusses various challenges faced and solutions implemented in developing and deploying a mobile-based online marketing project using J2EE technology. Key points:
1. Remote debugging of Tomcat was implemented to allow debugging the integrated project locally. NetBeans was configured for remote debugging.
2. Access logging in Tomcat was improved using the AccessLogValve to log request details for analysis. Extending this valve hides passwords in login requests.
3. Load balancing with Apache HTTP Server as the balancer was set up to improve performance, scalability and high availability across multiple Tomcat nodes with session replication.
Tomcat clustering allows multiple Tomcat application servers to work together as a single unit to provide scalability and high availability. There are two types of clustering: vertical scaling uses multiple servers on a single machine, while horizontal scaling uses independent servers across multiple machines for better performance. A typical Tomcat cluster uses a load balancer like Apache mod_jk for request distribution and a session replication method for shared state. Configuring a cluster involves setting up multiple Tomcat instances, configuring the load balancer and workers, and enabling session sharing if needed.

STORELOCATOR
Storelocator is a location-based service that provides
information about whereabouts of the nearest stores, as
well as available items, sorted by brands and retailers.
Storelocator has an especial tool that is a shopping guide.
The service also runs distribution of text messages from
brands to customers due their location. It enables various
options to receive newsletters – in the store, online, via
SMS, at mobile-friendly websites or on Facebook. The
moment this service gets active, customers start
receiving notifications of them being close to stores of
their interest, discounts and special offers.
One can also use guides, created by other customers, or
design a shopping route of his own.
CHALLENGE
At early stages of Miritec involvement in the project, the
main problem was an insufficient technical competency
of a Customer’s team. Miritec experts were to conduct
deep analysis of functionality of the service, and together
with Customer’s team outline ways for the development
of the end product, and realize them.
TASK
Over the last 5 years, the system was multiply enriched,
resulting in a big part of its code being out of date. It
should have been refactored gradually. In June 2014,
Miritec has entirely embraced this task. To effectively
distribute assignments regarding service improvement,
the code was divided into several self-sufficient modules.
Backup was one of the requirements, as the system was
to operate in 24/7 mode. Service’s back end was based on
CMS Wordpress, and therefore it should have been
rewritten using PHP Yii framework.
SOLUTIONS
To date, Miritec has completed the entire range of tasks
that included:
improvement of service’s back end that was
rewritten on PHP Yii framework;
development of modules: Shopping Guides, Special
Offers, Stores, Brands, Shopping Mall;
development of the tool responsible for data
copying to a standby system, aimed to replace the
main one if it fails;
FUTURE PLANS
develop a module to integrate the service with social
media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Twitter, My
Space, LiveJournal);
develop and modify a Discount System module,
applied to items of introduced brands;
up-level the code and rewrite it on PHP Yii 2
framework.
BUSINESS BENEFITS
By the end of the project, the competency of developers
from Customer’s team has increased significantly. As a
result, development cost has reduced by 40%.
Due performance metrics recognized by Storelocator,
Miritec team turned out to be 140% more effective than
any other team of developers, involved in the project
earlier.

STORELOCATOR
At the moment, the project is still ongoing, and the
integrated team of developers looks for sophisticated
IT-solutions to develop Storelocator service.
“While working upon this project, code refactoring was
one of the major challenges for Miritec developers. At the
same time, we had to establish an effective
communication, so that our teamwork could complete all
the targeted tasks.
This project is therefore a result of truly fruitful and
thoroughly arranged collaborative work, whereas each
member invested his skills and experience. Developers
from both teams created a knowledge-based and
effective IT-solution that meets business goals and
requirements of the Customer.”
