Scientists at the University of Bonn discovered a gene in fruit flies called "Schlank" which controls metabolism. When defective, it causes flies to lose all body fat. Similar genes in humans and other mammals called "lass genes" also regulate fat metabolism. Researchers hope to develop a weight loss pill that could alter lass genes to help humans lose weight effortlessly like defective fruit flies.
